Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

While there are moments when The Rings of Power loses some of its steam, the vital setup for the series’ future becomes a necessary evil. At the same time, plenty of moments appeal to the spectacle in Tolkien’s vision. Go to Full Review

Though having a little too much exposition, showrunners John D. Payne and Patrick McKay pull out all the stops in this new Tolkienian saga, armed with some spectacular visuals and arresting performances. Go to Full Review

There are the beginnings of a great show here. If only, like the heroes in the epic story it tells, the series can shoulder the burdens a little while longer. Go to Full Review

Paul M @overscanpaul Mar 3 I had some minor issues with the Lord of the Rings films, but they were great entertainment. Every second spent watching this turgid dross is a second you could put to more productive use. Watch literally anything else, it'll probably be more entertaining. Dialogue: woeful. As someone who has a Masters in Medieval Culture and has read everything Tolkien wrote, its painful to listen to. Acting: mostly wooden. Robert Aramayo seems to be trying his best with the awful dialogue he's saddled with. Morfydd Clark is tragically miscast and mischaractered as Galadriel, its like having Danny De Vito cast as the Terminator, but then her performance makes it even worse. Casting in general is basically nonsensical. Plot: Lamentable. Bears no resemblance to anything Tolkien wrote. Doesn't make even make internal sense within the show. Costumes, effects and locations: largely terrible. No sense of scale. See more Shark F. @SharkFin Feb 21 I tried. I really did... but somewhere Tolkien is whispering, "That’s not quite what I meant." I love LOTR, but this concept strayed far from it. See more Kimberley V @Whaka Feb 21 Terrible series, strayed so far from the source material it is unwatchable See more Catherine D. @CatherineOrozco Jan 13 Entirely disappointed with this revision of Tolkien’s work. I wish they stayed true to his work else just made it something new inspired by instead of piggybacking. The comparison from review tiers here is really jarring and extreme. It’s worth looking at and considering. See more Rosemary G @RoseAotearoa Jan 2 I was looking forward to this series and persevered through season 1. Really disappointing. A ponderous set up of characters some of whom were a bit annoying. I mean fake accents for hobbits felt rather pointless. Haven’t had the heart to tackle season 2. There were occasional parts that gave a bit of a sense of the magic of the original but in the whole the storylines felt awkward. See more Chandler H @Bamahudson Dec 28 Really disappointing. Final chance to enjoy the LOTR universe and this is just a disaster. See more Read all reviews
