Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

This is such an unbelievable let down, I’m still trying to assess how the Rings of Power has been forged (pun intended). Tolkien provides a vast amount of history and mythology but the show runners don’t seem to know what to do with any of it. There is no wonder in this world.

They have an interesting adaption and depiction of the lore of Sauron, as well as Galadriel, and others. I think it adds a valuable addition to the LOTR universe.

I am willing to accept that it may make sense for a series to somehow condense such a long period of time. I also understand that Amazon only has very marginal rights to Tolkien's work and that they have to rewrite so many things to avoid legal trouble. But that doesn't excuse the appallingly poor writing of this series, which disregards all logic and ignores the lore. One would expect that in such an expensive production, there would be people scrutinizing the plot very closely and eliminating errors. That was obviously not the case. What remains is a infantile, generically written fantasy story with a LotR veneer. The writers don't even understand the basics of Tolkien's work. Not the nature of elves and orcs, the nature of evil in Middle-earth, not Sauron, not the Istari, not Numenor. Everything is twisted to tell this hyper-generic and bland slop.
