      Critics Consensus

Kate Winslet reigns supreme with another commanding performance even as The Regime's hold over its scabrously satirical tone proves wobbly.

Robin H Starts off brilliantly. Great hopes for a real parody of the totalitarian mentality, with a mesmerising Winslet at its core. But as the episodes progress it becomes evident that the writer and producers don't know where to take it except to make Winslet's character completely lose her marbles and go off the rails into fairyland, taking the show with her. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review David F How did Kate Winslet ever get involved in this pos? Ridiculously broad “comedy” with ritually no point. The episodes become more and more painful to watch Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Daniel P Una serie absurda y sin sentido, no explican muchas cosas del todo bien, las actuaciones un poco pesadas, le doy dos estrellas ya que los ùltimos dos capitulos levantaron un poco mi ànimo de terminar la serie, del resto muy mala la verdad. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Debbra H I’ve given it half a star for Kate Winslet. I can have a very dry sense of humour though, emotionally I felt stranded in a dessert. It’s hard to pin point why it’s so awful, it just is. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review hardy c Boring. Pretentious. Plodding. Silly. Unfunny. All the sins of bad film and then some. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Erik V It started out promissing, but in total it just failed.. and how the f.. are you supposed to sympatise with the so called protagonist... MIssed opportunity, cause the premise and satire concept would actually be really good. But the writing just sucked.. Waste of time and unwatchable. Sarah Ditum Times (UK) You can imagine The Regime was terribly fun to make. Put Winslet in a Perspex sedan! Hilarious! Fill the palace with potatoes! So droll! But if it hadn’t been for the plinky-plink Russian score, I’d have forgotten it was supposed to be a comedy. Apr 22, 2024 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) The Regime is enormously funny, but it’s an unusual sort of funny, apt to make you goggle or gasp rather than laugh. To call it “dry” would be an understatement; it’s desiccated. Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Katie Rosseinsky Independent (UK) The show can’t seem to work out exactly what it is trying to satirise, instead painting in broad strokes. Despite Winslet’s off-kilter charisma, it’s just not enough to have you pledging allegiance. Rated: 3/5 Apr 10, 2024 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene As a black comedy about fascistic populism The Regime could hardly be more timely. Yet it nevertheless wore out its welcome well before reaching its eighth and final episode. Apr 26, 2024 Full Review Barbara Ellen Observer (UK) It's been a while since something so rammed with illustrious names and production pedigree capsized with such gusto. Rated: 2/5 Apr 15, 2024 Full Review Pat Stacey Irish Independent A rare misfire for Winslet that you’ve virtually forgotten about as soon as it’s over. Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews
