What to Know

Critics Consensus

Kate Winslet reigns supreme with another commanding performance even as The Regime's hold over its scabrously satirical tone proves wobbly.

Sarah Ditum The Times (UK) You can imagine The Regime was terribly fun to make. Put Winslet in a Perspex sedan! Hilarious! Fill the palace with potatoes! So droll! But if it hadn’t been for the plinky-plink Russian score, I’d have forgotten it was supposed to be a comedy. Apr 22, 2024 Full Review Hugo Rifkind The Times (UK) The Regime is enormously funny, but it’s an unusual sort of funny, apt to make you goggle or gasp rather than laugh. To call it “dry” would be an understatement; it’s desiccated. Apr 12, 2024 Full Review Katie Rosseinsky Independent (UK) The show can’t seem to work out exactly what it is trying to satirise, instead painting in broad strokes. Despite Winslet’s off-kilter charisma, it’s just not enough to have you pledging allegiance. Rated: 3/5 Apr 10, 2024 Full Review Karina Adelgaard Womentainment This limited series is a political satire that is partly over-the-top yet dangerously familiar. Rated: 4/5 Aug 11, 2025 Full Review Jen Shieff New Zealand Herald It's a wicked commentary on the fickleness of love and what a leader can expect to happen to them if they believe in themselves blindly. Rated: 5/5 Jan 8, 2025 Full Review Tara Ariano Cracked HBO has called The Regime, the new show of which she is the protagonist, a dark comedy. It’s definitely dark, but it’s hard to laugh. VITALII H Chancellor Elena (Kate) fcked up her country by being selfish and so self centered that it led to inevitable consequences. According to Wikipedia "The Regime" is an American political satire TV miniseries. When I read this I hoped to watch something very close to "Don't Look Up" and to see Kate W having her Meryl Streep presidential moment but unfortunately upon watching I found out that I was so wrong, it was nothing close to that... It was supposed to be funny but I guess I just forgot to laugh. I am telling you that Haughed just once and that was on the last episode that was the best one out of 6. It just was giving realness instead of delusional previous episodes with very bad writing. admire Kate, which if you didn't know is my favorite actress of all time but even she couldn't save this show. I watched only because of her and I gave "TheRegime" 5 out of 10 only because of Kate, without her it would've been 1 honestly, she carried the series on her shoulders, but the weight was too heavy. I loved her looks, loved her acting and she just don't owe me nothing. The best moment of the entire series was when Kate showed up on the zoom call in bathtub full of ice cause she was so hot while the ministers on the other hand were freezing, that was iconic. Loved the palace and in general series was very visually pleasing. But scripts were bad... Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/29/25 Full Review JoParkerBear P It’s a silly show in many ways, but we’re living it now, aren’t we? I was never bored. It doesn’t say anything new or profound about authoritarian regimes, but it excels at highlighting their absurdities. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/28/25 Full Review Shreef A This is one of the most important Series at all in my opinion, it's very critical, the performance of Winslet is unique, i couldn't believe that, she really established a new English accent, must waaaaaatch Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review J T Grounded by terrific performances and wonderful scenery, the series is full of suspense, humor, and shock. I couldn’t look away. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Paul J Watched the first episode. That's an hour of my life wasted. Was this really worth the effort of making? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Adri H Absolutely brilliant! Fantastic writing, smart, witty, bit of a dig at "how things are run", and the acting is top notch. Great cast.
