132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world's most famous mansion.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Residence situates itself in the White House for a lighthearted murder mystery that won't tax the brain, but Uzo Aduba's eccentric sleuth brings a welcome level of sophistication to proceedings.

Eric Deggans NPR A superior, genre-blending TV experience. Jun 7, 2025 Full Review Graeme Blundell The Australian The Residence is a delightful, sometimes breathless romp, despite a few longueurs along its somewhat frantic journey... Apr 21, 2025 Full Review Clarisse Loughrey Flicks (AU, NZ, UK) What Knives Out owes implicitly to Agatha Christie or The Last of Sheila, The Residence would rather point out explicitly. Apr 3, 2025 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …unfortunately for The Residence, depressing real life has overtaken the fun, fictional fancy it offers…watching Cordelia Cupp solve crimes is a quaint, entirely out-of-date take on American crime… Rated: 3/5 Sep 10, 2025 Full Review Cristina Escobar LatinaMedia.Co It’s good to see a Black woman in the eccentric genius role. Sep 1, 2025 Full Review Christopher Stevens Daily Mail (UK) It wastes what could have been a wonderful premise, showing us the inner workings of America's most famous building as though it's a doll's house. Rachel C. Love this show!! Love a good murder mystery! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/04/25 Full Review Pierre H Can't understand the rave reviews. I didn't get through the third episode. While the story doesn't make sense, The Residence is funny and witty at moments, but too often and also as a whole, it just gives off strange "vibes" that are too far off the mark for me. It feels a bit like a theatre play which people you have nothing in common with would enjoy. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/02/25 Full Review Madhu R. While the show had potential there were a few big weaknesses with the writing. The birding didn’t really help with plot or entertainment and the detective character was a bit contradictory between trying to figure out context whilst not being able to translate social context with other characters. Also other characters did not have much opportunity for character development, but good ending. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/25/25 Full Review Greta S complete waste of time like another fellow mentioned below. although i love giancarlo, this one didn t work for me Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/23/25 Full Review Humbei C I binge watched!! Crazy mind bending! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/14/25 Full Review James B "Great writing" is the first thing that comes to mind about this show. I assumed it would be filled with all the partisan cliches that are the norm today but the writer(s) avoided that which was worth a star or two alone.
