132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world's most famous mansion.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Residence situates itself in the White House for a lighthearted murder mystery that won't tax the brain, but Uzo Aduba's eccentric sleuth brings a welcome level of sophistication to proceedings.

What Knives Out owes implicitly to Agatha Christie or The Last of Sheila, The Residence would rather point out explicitly. Go to Full Review

Light and fun, it’s not telling us about any deep social issues. The best scenes are between the detective and her nephew -- there is real emotion there. Go to Full Review

…unfortunately for The Residence, depressing real life has overtaken the fun, fictional fancy it offers…watching Cordelia Cupp solve crimes is a quaint, entirely out-of-date take on American crime… Go to Full Review

Sawyer E @RT02086128 4d The premise was entertaining and the cast was good, but the lead detective was not as charming or dimensional as BBC’s Sherlock or Glass Onion’s Benoit Blanc. She was irritating and flat - I couldn’t listen to one more forced bird analogy. Had the show been a 3-4 hour thing, it might have been thrilling. But 8 hours of arbitrary drawing out? It was painful. The meandering in the finale was just brutal. See more Nushie S @Celestecinema Jul 3 A surprisingly witty and well-executed murder mystery — and one of the few American detective series I can say that about. While I didn’t find its Sherlock-esque sleuth quite as captivating as his other avatars, the series distinguishes itself through its attention to detail and playfulness. Think Knives Out meets Only Murders in The Building. Unfortunately, just as the puzzle pieces are coming together, the writing falls apart. The final episode feels as though it belongs to an entirely different series, trading flair for melodrama and subtle character layers for a heavy dose of 2D American patriotism. It’s an entertaining and often clever watch, and I would definitely give another season a chance—but for now I return to the reliable hands of British crime dramas. See more Jazzmin H @jazzminbree Jul 2 If you're into kitschy murder mysteries, this is definitely for you. Nuance of Clue and Knives Out with a fantastic cast of characters, this is an entertaining limited series. Truly wish they will bring Detective Cordellia Cupp back for another series. Would watch again. Have watched it over and over again. See more Lori S @LStu_ Jun 29 Such a great series!! The cast is great & I loved the humor... I haven't enjoyed a "Who Done It" as much in a long time. Highly recommended!
