132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world's most famous mansion.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Residence situates itself in the White House for a lighthearted murder mystery that won't tax the brain, but Uzo Aduba's eccentric sleuth brings a welcome level of sophistication to proceedings.

Eric Deggans NPR A superior, genre-blending TV experience. Jun 7, 2025 Full Review Graeme Blundell The Australian The Residence is a delightful, sometimes breathless romp, despite a few longueurs along its somewhat frantic journey... Apr 21, 2025 Full Review Clarisse Loughrey Flicks (AU, NZ, UK) What Knives Out owes implicitly to Agatha Christie or The Last of Sheila, The Residence would rather point out explicitly. Apr 3, 2025 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …unfortunately for The Residence, depressing real life has overtaken the fun, fictional fancy it offers…watching Cordelia Cupp solve crimes is a quaint, entirely out-of-date take on American crime… Rated: 3/5 Sep 10, 2025 Full Review Cristina Escobar LatinaMedia.Co It’s good to see a Black woman in the eccentric genius role. Sep 1, 2025 Full Review Christopher Stevens Daily Mail (UK) It wastes what could have been a wonderful premise, showing us the inner workings of America's most famous building as though it's a doll's house. David S This series is mostly well written and it certainly has engaging and funny moments peppered throughout. But it is also stretched out waaaaaay longer than it needs to be. This could have been a funny 4 episode or even 5 episode season. Instead it's an eight episode slog. Almost every joke, every scene, every character interaction goes on and on and on and on interminably. Most really go nowhere. Probably the most annoying -- and unforgivable -- thing however is how the writers turn the supposedly amazingly talented detective who never misses anything into total nincompoop. SPOILER AHEAD........ late in the show in episode 6 or 7 out of 8 they introduce a totally new character who the detective and every other character just seems to have forgotten exists. This characters should not have been missed as she was standing right there in the middle of everyone. She just turns up and the detective now starts all the overly talky investigations all over again. Its bad writing that treats the audience like dolts. If you like very talky shows with little action, this might be for you. But I ultimately didn't care for the murdered characters and had no interest in who killed him or why. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/15/25 Full Review Doyin O It’s just poor and stretched out. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/09/25 Full Review John M Such a shame this wasnt renewed. The premise was nothing new but the execution was fresh, offbeat, occasionally VERY funny and what a great ensemble. Kudos for the casting. If you are looking for something different this is it. I binged it in two sessions. Uzo Aduba is really excellent here. The writing is delicious. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/02/25 Full Review JoParkerBear P I enjoyed every minute of it. Funny and amusing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/28/25 Full Review DMC M This series is funny, that's for sure but the massive flood of dialog is wearing me out. I finally had to leave it for awhile and watch something else for awhile. I'll come back and finish it later. It was driving me crazy where I'd seen Uzo Aduba before then it dawned on me - Orange is the new Black. Her character isn't much different in this series, talking 100 miles an hour. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/18/25 Full Review NR D I am half way though the interviews E2 and what are you doing with this laggy script full of nonsense? The mystery is gone, over, done, there is no mystery anymore. There is only nonsense after nonsense. I like the work Shonda Rhimes does, it's the reason I started watching this. But come on, what are you doing with these stupid interviews that are just nonsense. I'm at 00:31:01 and it's time to put this show away and maybe someday come back. Or not.
