132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world's most famous mansion.

Critics Consensus

The Residence situates itself in the White House for a lighthearted murder mystery that won't tax the brain, but Uzo Aduba's eccentric sleuth brings a welcome level of sophistication to proceedings.

Light and fun, it’s not telling us about any deep social issues. The best scenes are between the detective and her nephew -- there is real emotion there. Go to Full Review

…unfortunately for The Residence, depressing real life has overtaken the fun, fictional fancy it offers…watching Cordelia Cupp solve crimes is a quaint, entirely out-of-date take on American crime… Go to Full Review

Valentina G @Valentina_G Sep 4, 2026 I really enjoyed this show and it shouldn't have been cancelled. Uzo Aduba is so funny and quirky as the poirot-like detective, and she brings so much charm to the role. Twists and turns in a way that a classic whodunnit should do it. See more Ted B @Movieaddicted Aug 22, 2026 4.0 stars; I really loved this series, and I'll probably run out of adjectives to describe how I view this film. So I will just use the adjectives everyone else seems to be using... witty, charming, slick, etc. But really what stood out to me was the set design. Imagine a recreation of the 132-room White House set in which the actors moved freely through. The plot was true to all the elements of a good mystery. There were many twists and turns and red herrings which kept it compelling. I confess that I had picked 4 different suspects for the whodunit aspect during the Series. I even added a 5th during the final Episode. I was wrong of course. Uzo Aduba stars as the eccentric, quick-witted, but genius, lead detective Cordelia Cupp. There is so much good in this film that there is plenty room to build a series of Cordelia Cupp movies. Unfortunately, it sounds like they blew the budget so bad on this film that there is not enough backing to continue. WHAT A SHAME!!! See more Stephen D @RT37880768 Aug 9, 2026 I'll be honest - I sat on this for several months after making it through the first half. Ultimately very happy I came back to it though - it's a very clever and funny whodunnit. The writers do a really great job of creating dozens of suspects with plausible motives, and making those characters stupid enough to continue implicating themselves. Much like the detective herself, I didn't know who the guilty was until the final minutes. Great cast all around, but kind of an ingenious use of Al Franken. See more Eileen G @EileenG399 Aug 9, 2026 I wasn't expecting to get this invested in a murder mystery at the White House. It's silly, stylish and surprisingly charming, and the ridiculous characters are honestly what made it for me. See more Earline S @RT56719066900 Aug 9, 2026 It was so good. I thought it was really funny. See more Read all reviews
