I feel bad for only just now watching it. What's crazy is you can take away the creature story and aspect of the show and it's still amazing given the overall plot. With fantastical elements, you do see the true events well weaved into the mythopoeic nature of the show. When you see the parallels between the show and the horrific suffering the 1845 Franklin Expedition crew had to endure, it becomes a very tragic to witness what they went through. Dying from poisoning, starvation, Fratricide, Confratricide, the brutal elements, suicide, scurvy, and cannibalism. You realize that the mythical inuit beast may be the least of their problems. See more Sam P @laniakea May 28 Season 1 is beautifully shot, atmospherically oppressive, and a fascinating fictionalised take on the doomed Franklin Expedition. The frozen Arctic setting is rendered with real craft, and the slow unravelling of the crew's desperate situation makes for compelling, intelligent drama. Which makes it all the more frustrating when the monster shows up in earnest. What was terrifying in glimpses becomes laughable in full view. American filmmakers seem constitutionally incapable of understanding that less is more. Suggestion and ambiguity will always outperform whatever the CGI budget can muster. The horror of men slowly freezing and starving at the edge of the world was more than enough. The supernatural element cheapened everything it touched. Restrain the monster and this is a classic. Instead, it's a frustrating near miss. See more ARG VIROX T @AVGVSTVS Apr 12 A very good series that blends historical facts with a touch of horror. You get caught up in the story and want to binge-watch the episodes. I found there's a slight lull in the middle of the season, but it doesn't become boring. Beyond the series itself, I think it delivers an authentic historical account very well; the cold seems to pierce the screen and send shivers down your spine. Furthermore, the era is rather well portrayed, this early industrial period that blends the ambitions of men with a new era of exploration, to which must be added the nascent field of modern medicine. Finally, this series highlights the fact that behind the simple disappearance of ships lie three years of suffering, cold, and disease in extreme conditions, reminding us that behind every historical event there were men with hopes and fears who felt every second of those three years that separated them from their departure and their deaths. Special mention goes to Jarred Harriswith as good as in Chernobyl. See more Squiddy K @RT10148715 Apr 1 I've watched this series four times now; each time I notice something new. The coldness seems to seep out of the screen and the beautiful but terrifying backdrop just adds to the feeling of overwhelming sadness and malevolence. The acting and characters are brilliant- Doctor Goodsir, Francis Crozier and Mr Blanky all stand out and Hickey is a fantastic villain. See more Read all reviews
