Danny Smith was born in Peckering, Ontario, where he got into acting via school plays. He later moved to Toronto where he worked at the reknowned improv rep, The Second City; here he was mentored by "SCTV"'s Joe Flaherty. Smith appeared in a number of film roles throughout his early career, mostly in minor parts in comedies like "National Lampoon's Senior Trip" and "The Big Hit." His film work was intermixed with appearances on television on programs like the teen sketch comedy show "It's Alive!" The biggest role of his young career was on the werewolf-centric series "Big Wolf on Campus," where he played opposite Brandon Quinn from 1999 through 2002. Additionally, he wrote the theme music for the show. Film work followed when the series ended, in the comedic horror musical "Suck" and in TV movies such as the drama "Deadliest Sea" and the family-friendly "Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars." Smith also fronted the band the City Drive after he moved to Los Angeles. The band's career lasted from 2003 through 2009, at which point Smith returned to Toronto, where his primary focus has shifted back to acting.
