David Conolly grew up in England and intended to follow his father into the psychiatry profession. But he got involved in theater as a youth and eventually started landing increasingly large stage roles while still in his late teens, including appearing in a West End production. His studies then switched from psychiatry to theater and he started receiving strong critical notices for several performances. He also became involved with working behind the scenes, staging an alternative comedy revue in London clubs, as well as directing short films for clients such as the Red Cross and working on spec screenplays. Collaborating with his creative partner Hannah Davis, Conolly helmed his first feature film with the 2004 release "Mothers and Daughters." The film is a dark comedy focusing on a disparate group of Londoners from different social and economic backgrounds who intersect in various ways. Conolly and Davis next made another black comedy with the 2008 film, "The Understudy," about a depressed hardly-working actress who lands a gig as the understudy to a loud-mouthed movie star who is trying to earn some stage credibility. Lucky for the understudy, she gets a chance to shine in the production after the movie star is unable to perform. Conolly also performs in and directs the comedy show "Hindsight News."
