Going ahead and getting the things I didn’t love out of the way: sometimes (not all the time, but sometimes), it felt like I was watching a Disney Channel movie. Like whole the “I need to start kissing the right guys”? Very corny. Also, I found it a tad overdramatic. I understand the film is dealing with rather heavy subject matter, but sometimes it felt slightly overdone. But still, this was a solid movie, for sure. At times, it can be very emotional, very poignant and heartfelt, and it tapped into this relatable high-school experience that felt lived in. And while sometimes it leaned into the Disney-esque tropes, other times it subverted them in satisfying ways. Sunny Sandler is great here, and really all of the cast did quite well. They felt like real people you know, which very much helps the experience. So this was a good movie. Not exceptional, but it’s maybe the best streaming movie I’ve seen all year. Well done, Sandlers.
