Over the course of his long career, David Maples has worked as an actor ("For Richer or Poorer"), producer ("Huff"), and writer ("In Plain Sight"). Maples got his start with a brief writing gig on the quirky, animated Nickelodeon series "Rugrats" and later worked on several episodes of "Home Improvement," a sitcom centered on hapless TV show host and easygoing father Tim Taylor (played by his "Poorer" co-star Tim Allen) and his rowdy but loving family. In 2000, he joined the writing staff of the award-winning children's show "Teacher's Pet," created by contemporary artist and illustrator Gary Baseman and featuring Nathan Lane as the voice of Spot, a clever dog who, disguised as a young boy, enrolls in the 4th grade and becomes the title star pupil; he later lent his voice to a minor role in the 2004 big-screen adaptation, which featured Kelsey Grammer as the mad scientist who drives the film's "Pinnochio"-inspired plot. That same year, he became a producer on the short-lived series "Huff," which chronicled a successful psychiatrist's (Hank Azaria) mid-life crisis. In 2008, Maples created the USA cable drama "In Plain Sight," about a tough United States marshal (Mary McCormack) who relocates federal witnesses while managing her dysfunctional family, and has since written and produced a majority of the popular show's episodes.
