Fred Tan
Taiwanese-born filmmaker who arrived in the US in 1975 and served as the Hollywood editor and film critic of "China Times" before making his directorial debut in 1986 with "Dark Night." Tan received attention for his third feature, "Rouge of the North" (1988), centering on the life of an opium-addicted mother during the first half of the 20th century. His death at age 35 was due to acute hepatitis contracted in 1989 after Tan returned to China during the student uprising in Tiananmen Square.
