Gina Matthews is a writer and producer in both film and television. After working as an assistant to a producer in the early 1990s, Matthews had a flurry of producing jobs in the late '90s, which resulted in such films as the horror thriller "Urban Legend" in 1998, the Alfre Woodard drama "The Wishing Tree" in 1999, and the very successful Mel Gibson-Helen Hunt romantic comedy chick flick "What Women Want" in 2000. She also began producing for television during the same stretch; in 1999, she co-created, along with Ryan Murphy, the two-season WB dramatic comedy "Popular," for which she also executive-produced and penned an episode. That same year, she executive-produced the James Earl Jones family drama, "Summer's End," which won a Daytime Emmy win for Outstanding Children's Special. In 2004, Matthews co-created, along with Grant Scharbo (a frequent collaborator) and David Barrett, the TV drama "The Mountain," which she also executive-produced and wrote 10 of the show's 13 episodes. That same year, she was one of several producers for the romantic comedy "13 Going on 30," which launched actress Jennifer Garner's career. In 2010, Matthews again teamed up with Scharbo, executive-producing several episodes of his co-creation, the crime mystery "The Gates."
