Chris S @Janomi Jun 19 Isn't It Romantic has a funny premise and spends much of its runtime poking fun at romantic-comedy conventions. The screenplay takes aim at impossibly attractive love interests, grand romantic gestures, perfect apartments, and the fantasy logic that often defines the genre. For a while, the satire creates some entertaining moments. Rebel Wilson's comedic timing and self-awareness carry much of the film. She understands how ridiculous the premise is and helps ground the absurdity. Unfortunately, her style of comedy isn't for everyone, and the repeated focus on jokes about her appearance and weight becomes repetitive compared to the sharper genre humor. The biggest issue is that the movie eventually becomes the thing it's parodying. After mocking romantic-comedy clichés, it relies on many of those same ideas to resolve the story. It tries to poke fun at the played out rom-com staples but it falls just short on every one. The cast is made up of a bunch of stars that I like. But the script fell significantly short.
