Garmes shot his first feature in 1924 and subsequently proved himself adept at romantic, exotic subjects, photographing several Josef von Sternberg films in the early 1930s. Outstanding achievements include "Zoo in Budapest" (1933), "China Girl" (1942) and Max Ophuls's "Caught" (1949).
