Lele Pons was a Venezuelan-born internet personality and social media star. Pons moved to the United States at age 5, and received her first phone at age 15. Shortly afterward, when Vine was released in 2012, Pons experimented with the 6-second video app by making comedic shorts with her friends. She quickly gained popularity, and after amassing a following on other social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter, she became the first Vine user to reach 1 billion "loops," or plays, of her videos in 2014. Her influence led her to being invited to the White House in 2015, where she met Michelle Obama and created Vines with other social media stars in order to support the First Lady's campaign to help disadvantaged students attend college. Her first book Surviving High School, co-written with New York Times bestseller Melissa de la Cruz, was published in 2016 and was inspired by her negative experiences being bullied in high school. She briefly appeared in an episode of the second season of the "Scream" TV series (MTV, 2015- ) and starred in the YouTube pseudo-reality series "Escape the Night" (2016). As of August 2016, Pons held the record for most loops on Vine at over 8 billion loops, and was credited with creating the phrase "Do it for the Vine."
