Critics Consensus

Though it may seem like just another Harry Potter knockoff, Percy Jackson benefits from a strong supporting cast, a speedy plot, and plenty of fun with Greek mythology.

Amy Nicholson I.E. Weekly The Greek gods had outsized powers and petty grievances. These Gen-Y demigods are no different - it's a whole generation of kids with daddy issues Rated: C Feb 18, 2010 Full Review A.O. Scott At the Movies I thought it was mischievous and witty and amusing and I was just sort of drawn into it. Feb 16, 2010 Full Review Time Out It's not enough to compensate for the computer-game-style plotting, which is largely based on us picking up narrative nuggets that mechanically slot into place later on. Rated: 2/5 Feb 16, 2010 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review This is a by-the-numbers fantasy adventure that merges the modern world with a magical one. Pedro Henrique C This movie is completely poorly constructed and written. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Dylan R Where is ares?Since when did percy go through the Hollywood sign? This is not acceptable for something based on a book!!! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/19/24 Full Review Salma M Woah. Just woah. This is why you should listen to the book's author before making an adaptation. There's no hating against the cast nor Rick Riordan, but there certainly is against how the movie turned out. Chris Columbus is a wonderful director, but this was simply devastating. 20 year olds were casted to play 12 yrs while the production removed the best book scenes and presented total innacurency and irrespect towards the original novels. The series fans were terribly dissapointed. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/16/24 Full Review Alexandra K As a devoted fan of the Percy Jackson book series, I found "The Lightning Thief" movie to be an overwhelming disappointment. It felt like the director didn't grasp the essence of the books at all. The plot was chaotic and bore little resemblance to the book's narrative. Characters who were so vividly crafted in the novels came across as shallow and misrepresented on screen. Not a single one seemed to match their book descriptions, making it hard to feel any connection, not to mention the ages. Percy and his friends are supposed to be twelve, I love Logan Lerman, but he did not play the part of a twelve-year-old boy. Though the recent TV adaptation may not perfectly align with physical descriptions either, at least those actors capture the spirit and can act. The only saving grace of the movie was its visual effects, which, while impressive, couldn't compensate for the lackluster storytelling. Ultimately, it felt like a hollow adaptation that failed to do the books justice. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
