What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though it may seem like just another Harry Potter knockoff, Percy Jackson benefits from a strong supporting cast, a speedy plot, and plenty of fun with Greek mythology.

Amy Nicholson I.E. Weekly The Greek gods had outsized powers and petty grievances. These Gen-Y demigods are no different - it's a whole generation of kids with daddy issues Rated: C Feb 18, 2010 Full Review A.O. Scott At the Movies I thought it was mischievous and witty and amusing and I was just sort of drawn into it. Feb 16, 2010 Full Review Time Out It's not enough to compensate for the computer-game-style plotting, which is largely based on us picking up narrative nuggets that mechanically slot into place later on. Rated: 2/5 Feb 16, 2010 Full Review Justin Kim Loud and Clear Reviews Though its infamy may be overblown, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is still an unimpressive film that more than justifies the book fans’ outcry for a better adaptation. Jan 6, 2025 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review This is a by-the-numbers fantasy adventure that merges the modern world with a magical one. manon u yes its nothing like the book and pales in comparison. however, i liked this movie so much it drove me to read the books in the first place. i watched this movie multiple times as a kid and even though it differs a lot from the source material, it was a fun watch Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Kaden W I’m sorry this movie is awful. Comparing it to the original book is just not possible it breaks the rules of the original book the casting choices aren’t great. Just read the original book and you’ll love that. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review james o the film had been suggested as Harry Potter with Greek mythology. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review Blu B It's ok. It defintely has that Chris Columbus feel to it at times also for better or worse. This also can get suprisngly gory and dark at times too for a PG-13 type film from this era. The music isn't bad. It's got a whimsical Spielberg type feel to it but it's also a bit forgettable as well at times. It's better in some parts. Everything else though is just ok. It's a bit of a mess at times. The acting is the most consistent problem here. It's just alright. Percy is just very forgettable despite going on the heroes journey. The comedic relief is very hit or miss. And the love interest just feels hammed in and is just along for the ride. The cinematography at times is cool and other times just doesn't fit. The biggest problem here is that the greek/fantasy like settings don't really work with the real world locations. It just looks like 2 different movies at times and really doesn't work together. This has a ton of CGI and the action is a bit over the top especially in the end. It's loud and obnoxious. The CGI is just alright. This needed more tangible effects to make these 2 worlds work better. Than character devlopment wise it feels like that stuff is just missing and we get the bare minimum. The story makes perfect sense. It's standard heroes journey stuff but the heart and character is absent. We just get introduced to all these characters with no real backstory. Percy is a loser and dyslexic....and nothing else. The comedic relief is just the comedic relief. We never see him really bond with his mother or any real world building with the God's fantasy realm. Also, the God's are just ok....I don't believe really for a second any of them are Gods and feel miscast. They really needed someone like Chris Hemsworth for this. And than when they arrive in the underworld it just feels like crazy stuff just happens with no real obvious clues looking back. The development we do get it more just gags than anything of substance to on the road. And again having these greek gods in real modern locations feels almost like a comedy visually but it's done serious. It's very odd but ok enough I guess at best. Skip This though. There are way better Heroes journey films and way better works from this director. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/08/25 Full Review James R This film is a very innacurrate representation of the books it was modelled after and failed to be as well made as the books were. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/28/25 Full Review Henry S Read the books. The movies all suck. The books are good. The author of the original books himself physically cringed at the scripts and refuses to watch the movies. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/25 Full Review Read all reviews
