Alexandra H I really enjoyed this movie. I live in L.A. and am very familiar with the type of Malibu suburban family shown in the film. The film shows the extreme contrast between the circumstances of a Chinese family who has a teenage girl exactly the same age as the Malibu family. The video of Shanghai was fascinating. And the story was simple but very engaging. I think that the critics may not have been impressed as this is a simple movie. But it's very enjoyable, positive, and I learned a lot. It's more a film for the audience than for critics. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/30/18 Full Review Audience Member Loved it, still one of my favourite movies! Peter Debruge Miami Herald Sure, it's mushy, but you can't make a movie called Smile and not be at least a wee bit saccharine about your intentions. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 26, 2005 Full Review Gene Seymour Newsday This movie's so filled with admirable intentions that they practically spill onto the screen before it starts. Rated: 3/4 Apr 21, 2005 Full Review Sheri Linden Hollywood Reporter There's little doubt that a nonfiction film would have been more powerful than this strained drama, which offers a Malibu brat as the audience's point of identification. Apr 8, 2005 Full Review Laura Kelly South Florida Sun-Sentinel However worthy the sentiment, this one won't leave viewers with a smile. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 26, 2005 Full Review Jeff Vice Deseret News (Salt Lake City) This drama, which was bankrolled by the people behind the international Operation Smile program, has the best of intentions. But it's so painfully earnest that it becomes insufferable. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 5, 2005 Full Review Sean P. Means Salt Lake Tribune Good cause, bad movie.
