Audience Member The story of Salome is fascinating, not so much in and of itself (it's only a few lines in the Bible), but because of the dramatic intensity that artists bring to it in various forms (paintings, operas, ballets). I enjoyed this flamenco version of the story, which provided an interesting contrast to my recent viewings of more traditional ballet films. Amazing costumes (that dance- of-the-seven-veils dress is really something), strong lighting, and a minimalist set that puts the dancers center stage make this an entertaining and rhythmic production. My one caveat, however, is the director's choice to portray John the Baptist in his post-severed state; clad entirely in black with a plate around his head, he looks like he's wearing one of those "head on a platter" exhibits from your local children's science center. I guess it's difficult to avoid hokiness when showing a severed head onstage, but I can't help feeling that they could have come up with something better. It ends an otherwise impressive ballet on an unintentionally humorous note. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
