A decidedly cold, protracted work marked by solid, but passionless performances and a preference for polished, fashion-magazine imagery.

For all its literary references, the thing certainly looks like a shallow though slick French melodrama.

The script is surprisingly the weakest link, with contrivances and melodramatics piling up after the beautiful and restrained first act. I really liked Tanovic's direction though, it's rhythmically and aesthetically compelling. A shame that what he's shooting sometimes gets a little silly.

The second instalment of Kieslowski Purgatory trilogy only leaves you wishing the Polish master were still alive and kicking with an annoying score that might still have him turning on his grave. RIP Kieslowski, you are still missed!
