Alexander Walker London Evening Standard Visconti makes the spiritual irony of the film apparent behind the mundane facts of life: but he makes both totally absorbing. Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Visconti, like Camus, realizes that the meaning of The Stranger is not to be found in the plot but in the mood. The mood is ennui, the dominant emotion of a man who hardly cares enough to tell his own story. Rated: 4/4 Apr 7, 2015 Full Review TIME Magazine Visconti's film of The Stranger follows the action of the novel with hardly a comma missing -- and therein lies both its strength and its weakness. Apr 7, 2015 Full Review Penelope Mortimer Observer (UK) It is, in parts. a little too highly coloured, too glossy. Nevertheless it is, I think, a very fine picture and more than worthy of Camus's "Outsider," from which it is adapted. Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Michael J. Casey Boulder Weekly It's a stroke of genius that nothing in "Lo Straniero" feels scripted, not even Meursault's final confession. Rated: 4.5/5 May 7, 2020 Full Review Gene Youngblood Los Angeles Free Press Literature and cinema - incompatible but habitual bedfellows - are fused flawlessly in this adaptation of Camus' existentialist masterpiece. Yuvraj C An intense film. people who haven't read the novel will find this compelling and rewarding. and those who have read this novel will find no surprises in the film, it is well adapted true to the novel. I don't know why many critics didn't like this but in my opinion this is very much underrated Visconti film. And Mastroianni gave a stellar performance as lead. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review StephenPaul C The greatest 1.75 hours ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Considering the film-making techniques and acting styles of pre-1970 cinema, 'Lo Straniero' is a pretty decent, though not perfect, adaptation. While this is not Visconti at his finest, he is mostly able to convey the absurdism, coolness and subtly disturbing nature of the mid-century masterpiece in a way in which few films of the time would have been able to. Sadly, it still falls into some 'golden era' traps which render the movie too cinematic, if not romantic, to give L'Etranger the status it deserves, but it still manages do get the message across well. Perhaps the novel would get even better treatment with modern-day filmmaking techniques. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Visconti's Lo Straniero vividly depicts the hopelessness of alienation and Existentialism. Marcello Mastroianni's character is more approachable and familiar to the audience as we may all become unaware what is happening beyond oneself. Speaking of the literary symbolism, Albert Camus is indeed more friendly to the screen admirers than Franz Kafka. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member The fact that this is an extremely faithful, line-by-line adaptation is ironically the problem with this film, especially considering Mastroiani's off-the-mark, far-from-nuanced composition. Besides, Visconti's cheap direction doesn't help with all the horrible zooms and inept lighting. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member A simple and routine adaptation as if Visconti grabbed the book and filmed it line by line!
