Chris Hunneysett Daily Mirror (UK) Discarding fidelity for crazed creative ambition, it hits the creative sweet spot between the outrageous spectacle of Fritz Lang's classic, Metropolis, and the gung ho whizz bang of Buster Crabbe's Flash Gordon adventure serial. robert p A fascinating look back in time, when making movies was in it's infancy shows just how ingenious people were in making movies, though the special effects were in their beginning stages, still the people involved in this film, did an excellent job, thus the *3 & 1/2* star rating!!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This is an incredible movie for it's time, & still entertaining today. I was mesmerized by the undersea "people". Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite a ground breaking Sci-Fi masterpiece made in 1929 as sound was creeping its way in, like the Jazz Singer this has certain scenes with dialogue but predominately a silent film. The sets & story are rather ambitious for this film & it would have a been a significant production if its day. The story of a group of researchers who believe that if they search the ocean deep enough there are races there. Incredible visual effects with the use of models & trick photography. This film also was blatantly anti Russian & was afraid of showing it. Very ahead of its time this film... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Has a foot in multiple worlds: land and sea, silent and talkie, Marxist pamphlet and sci-fi melodrama of the hand bomb-flinging, plastic horned baby alligator, frogmen, and sluggish octopus variety. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member pretty good 4 its time now a curious relic as the studio switched 2 talkies its part talkie part silent & no noises like boots walking across the floor pretty kool spec efx. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member it looks like i'm the 4th person on flixster to rate this so i think it needs a review. it's a mostly silent underseas adventure starring lionel barrymore as a scientist who wants to prove the existence of mermen. he builds some submarines which are promptly confiscated by the military for more nefarious purposes. there're some really well done scenes including octopus attacks; very cool effects for 1929. a kind of prequel to 20,000 leagues under the sea Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
