What to Know

Critics Consensus

Day of the Dead may arguably be the least haunting entry in George A. Romero's undead trilogy, but it will give audiences' plenty to chew on with its shocking gore and scathing view of society.

J. Hoberman Village Voice Romero has remained true to the wise-guy left-liberalism that underlies the E.C. gross-out aesthetic. Jun 25, 2025 Full Review Rex Reed New York Post The zombies are no longer scary. They're Halloween camp. Jun 25, 2025 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Boston Phoenix The tensions escalate in predictable ways, but the mood is relentless. Jun 25, 2025 Full Review Terry Lawson Dayton Daily News I do not begrudge Romero his obsessions, but I can't help but wish he would find a way to balance the phony brains with some real ones. Jun 25, 2025 Full Review Stephen Hunter Baltimore Sun It is a movie to goof on... and a movie whose stupidity and shameless, hustling eagerness to show the unshowable somewhat grant it dispensation from the outrage one ought to feel. Nick O In this thoughtful third installment in the “Dead” series, the zombies take a backseat and let the humans be the real monsters for awhile! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/06/25 Full Review nick s While the zombie apocolyse theme is always a tad silly, you have to hand it to the special effects department in this one. Impressive scenes of bodies being torn up, albeit a bit on the gory side. There was something of a story and a fair effort put into character arcs. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Friendly D Favourite Zombie movie ever. There's genuine tension between the characters and because they're confined and their behaviour is so unpredictable it creates a feeling of dread, uncertainty and fear. The practical effects are superb and still stand up today + Romero was always big on character development, and that - along with everything else - is what gives this zombie movie the edge over everything else. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Shawn R My favorite movie in the series.. the gore is great! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review S K Remarkably bad. Some of the worst acting ever committed to film. Gore effects are quite good, however - especially for 1985. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
