In this sequel to the 1931 French film "Marius," Marius (Pierre Fresnay) takes a five-year job on a ship headed for the Indian Ocean. His lover, Fanny (Raimu), learns she is pregnant with his baby and must decide if she wants to raise an illegitimate child alone, or accept a marriage proposal from Panisse, a wealthy older man who she does not love. Uncertain whether Marius will ever return, she faces serious choices regarding her future.

The second installment in the Marseilles Trilogy that takes you further into the ever complicated relationship between Marius & Fanny. Marius went with his desire for the sea & left Fanny alone & pregnant. The film chronicles her struggle & her immediate family & Marius'. Yet again the dialogue just glistens in this film & the characters (even side ones) are genuinely like able. You really sympathize for Fanny in this film & her struggle to do what is right, this film has terrific twist in the final chapter.

The second film in Allegret and Pagnol's trilogy, this film is just as utterly charming and emotional as the first. Resuming where the first one ended, Fanny must deal with the consequences of her romance with Marius, now off at sea.

have to say...really not enjoying the trilogy very much. stylistically, this is way less jean vigo or jean renoir than i would have liked. the acting is actually pretty top notch with a particular strong comedic perfoamcen from raimu. oh well, bring on cesar
