James W A good but not great film version of Shakespeare's classic play. Nicol Williamson who electrified audiences with his stage performance as Hamlet reprises his role he. He does a good job. Anthony Hopkins (who was almost the same age as Williamson) is quite good as Claudius. Overall, the acting is good in it. It was singer Marianne Faithful's film acing debut as Ophelia. She does seem a little flat in the role but she does sing in one scene and has a wonderful singing voice. Overall, the acting is good by everyone else. Tony Richardson, who directed the stage version with Nicholson directs this film with a lot of close-ups, which was an interesting choice. It's definitely worth seeing once. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/03/25 Full Review Stephen Jules R One of the best Shakespeare adaptions ever esp of Hamlet and overall Good timing fittingly to stumble into it one red rose Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/06/23 Full Review Shioka O Mostly faces and upper torsos, so kinda difficult to tell given situation... yes it has great dialogs from original Shakespeare though, feel static as a film. Watch Marianne Faithful as Ophelia, and Young Anthony Hopkins as Claudius. Nicol Williamson looks old for Hamlet, but excellent. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/22 Full Review Audience Member 60's mod Hamlet, but quite good. Marianne Faithfull was a wonderful Ophelia. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Nicol Williamson is easily the most brilliant and satisfying Hamlet yet. Under Tony Richardson's brisk pacing, Williamson's flashing intelligence reveals the first really convincing Hamlet on film. Olivier is too cerebral not to mention effeminate and Branagh too hyper, he overdoes it in exactly the way Hamlet urges the actors to avoid. Kevin Kline turns in the best American version but we colonials can never reproduce the true English accents the Bard requires and the Royal Shakespeare Company had bred in its bones. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Stilted and ponderous. This is a very poor production of Hamlet. There are much better filmed versions of the play available Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
