Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine 10/16/2019
It's a robust and sometimes highly diverting comedy-drama, weakened by an excess of flamboyant overacting on the part of John Laurie. Go to Full Review

Matthew T Apr 24 Kidnapped was a favorite of mine growing up—I remember watching the classic adventure film when my parents rented the video or when it aired on the Disney Channel. Revisiting it in 2025, the pace feels slower, a relic of a different cinematic era. Still, there's a charm to it that makes me wish Disney—or any studio—would revisit stories like this, along with Treasure Island and other timeless adventures. When the comic book well finally runs dry and sci-fi exhausts its futures, maybe filmmakers will look not to monarchs or political despots for inspiration, but to our ancestors—and the grand adventures they spun into legend. See more r 9 06/23/2020 Such a bore. With a title like 'Kidnapped' you'd rightly expect thrills, but it produces anything but. There are adventure elements here no doubt, though barring one moment of drama it's basically just the lead character visiting various places. He has just one intention throughout, so you're just waiting for that to resolve itself. Too slow and predictable. Cast-wise it's decent. James MacArthur, in his third Disney film at this point, continues to give mid-range performances. Peter Finch (Allan) is the best actor involved, yet even with him I've certainly seen better; Bernard Lee (Hoseason) too, in-fact they are both very good together in 1956's 'The Battle of the River Plate'. Elsewhere, John Laurie does alright as Ebenezer. More action needed, as it plods its way to the climax; which is probably the least entertaining part unfortunately. The studio's worst live-action production up until February 1960, in my opinion. See more ashley h @ashleyhobgood87 10/09/2017 Kidnapped is a disappointing film. It is about a wealthy lad who is cheated out of his inheritance and sold into servitude by his duplicitous and greedy uncle, Ebenezer. Peter Finch and James MacArthur give terrible performances. The screenplay is badly written. Robert Stevenson did a horrible job directing this movie. I was not impressed with this motion picture. See more 09/14/2017 An adequate version of RL Stevenson's classic tale, almost a Reader's Digest version. Several excellent actors playing against type.
