Audience Member There's only one king of the mountain when it comes to racing. Dennis Hopper, Harry Hamlin, and Joseph Bottoms star in an early drag race story. A mechanic Steve and a songwriter Buddy challenge each other behind the wheel on Mulholland Drive. Mostly it's for money and prestige. All the while they try to avoid the cops in the process. Steve falls in love with an artist named Tina. Yet his buddies are striving to make actual careers in the music business. Steve must reevaluate his life choices by choosing another path or staying behind the wheel. The races are cool but are far and few in between. There's too much emphasis on the characters trying to make a simple life. A fulfilling life is more than just work and play, making serous inroads might be more important, reassessing our mantras might be just what we need The movie is less than stellar as far as big filmmaking but was significant in being among the first films about street racing and communities of street racers, as well as because it was inspired by the activities of real people who raced in the Los Angeles area. Another movie that gets lost in the shuffle but far beyond unwarranted. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This may be lost to the VHS graveyard... Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Coming late in the carploitation genre (even if it does have Dennis Hopper in it) it almost seems lost. In fact I had only heard of it recently. The racing on Mullholland Drive is this film's highlight but it does try to add some depth to the characters but even then they come off a little shallow. Harry Hamlin seems like he should be past being obsessed w/ racing just for the trill of it @ his age but no one really seems to be growing up as they are chasing dreams & staying up to the crack of dawn drinking instead of taking any real responsibility. The only one who does is Deborah Van Valkenburgh (also the romantic interest) who is trying to get her music career off the ground. Even then she's really going no where. If you're in the need for speed though check it out; you shouldn't be disappointed Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Dennis Hopper owns this movie. A great definitive 80's flick in every way, about underground racing on Mulholland Drive, sort of like The Fast and Furious circa '81.
