Mister Roberts offers a marvelous mix of comedy and drama, expertly pulled off by its four name actors. Go to Full Review
Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine 10/17/2019
The locker-room lustiness of the novel and the stage production has been toned down a bit, as you might expect, and one or two comic highlights are weakened by overemphasis, but on the whole this is a vastly enjoyable show. Go to Full Review

Bruce L @pharmboy1603 3d This is a 50’s movie that hold up 70 years later. It’s an interesting contrast to action packed WW2 dramas and reminds one about all the mundane efforts of unheralded heroes that support those fighting on the front lines. There is a tour de force of great movie stars and character actors of the golden age of Hollywood; William Powell, Henry Fonda, James Cagney, Ward Bond as well as (at that time) new comer Jack Lemmon. Lemmon was the primary comic relief in this film and won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. See more David G @RT19253995 Jun 10 This was Ford s third outing with Fonda and when I was a kid and watched it on tv, I was devastated. I was eight and grew up black and white films. I was and still am charmed by the performances and Lem’ons manic performance led to an Oscar. While the majority of early films were adaptations of stage plays, it’s always been a problem to avoid the claustrophobia. Thankfully the film is shot on the sea (and interiors in Hollywood) and one can almost feel the breeze with the wall paced movement of the film. All I all I think this Fonda/ Ford production is an entertaining yet sympathetic look at different elements of war, albeit light hearted in nature. While his Grapes of Wearh is a masterpiece, Mister Roberts is a good natured film of a coterie of characters stuck on a bucket who long to see some action. The leads are worthy of giving this film a watch at least once and I’m 72 now. Enjoy? See more Henry D @Henry_Domke Mar 28 The humor didn't work and the print wasn't very good. It's a stupid sexist period piece. We quit after 20-minutes. See more Pete W @RT56398213 Mar 24 Elite cast and brilliant writing. It shows that in wartime, not everyone is in combat. Many are far behind the lines, doing the difficult jobs without the recognition of combat troops. James Cagney plays an excellent villain role as the tyrannical captain and Henry Fonda allows those around him (mainly Jack Lemmon to flourish. Can't forget to mention the legendary William Powell as doc. The perfect balance between Fonda and Lemmon. See more Jim S @PapaJim1963 Mar 12 This is one of those films that sneaks up on you. On the surface it’s a lighthearted Navy comedy set on a supply ship during WWII, but underneath the laughs there’s a really human story about duty, frustration, friendship, and the quiet heroism of ordinary guys stuck doing the unglamorous work of war. Henry Fonda plays Roberts with this steady decency that makes you root for him instantly, James Cagney’s tyrannical captain is perfectly hateable, and Jack Lemmon steals scenes with pure chaotic energy. It’s funny, bittersweet, and surprisingly touching in a way older movies often are when they take their time with characters. Sometimes the best stories aren’t about the big battles—they’re about the people waiting for them.
