Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Neighbors is a truly interesting comedy, an offbeat experiment in hallucinatory black humor. It grows on you. Rated: 3/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Rob Gonsalves Rob's Movie Vault It's very plastic satire, grounded not in real life or genuine observation but in easy, tired ideas of suburban life. Andy B Dan Aykroyd could not save John Belushi from himself. Sad! Für einen netten Filmabend reicht es. 6,5/10 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/20/23 Full Review william k Not quite as anarchic and wild as Blues Brothers, this James Belushi/Dan Aykroyd comedy does have its own charm and some quite amusing moments. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review james i I love this movie. Absolutely hilarious. I think it defies what people expect of not just Ackroyd and Belushi, but what a comedy can be. It's dark, silly and hilarious. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review dave s Thomas Berger's satirical novel Neighbors was a no-holds barred slap in the face to American suburbia. Unfortunately, what worked so well in the novel falls flat in John G. Avildsen's adaptation. Earl Keese (John Belushi, in his final role) lives a quiet and predictable life in a quiet cul-de-sac, until things get turned upside down when Vic (Dan Ackroyd) and Ramona (Cathy Moriarty) move in next door. The excesses that worked so well in the novel become overbearing and implausible in the film, to the point where it just feels like piling on after about fifteen minutes. To make matters worse, the music score feels like it was lifted from an episode of The Addams Family and is simply relentless throughout. Had things been handled in a more subtle manner, it would have done justice to the book. As it is, it is just annoying. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review jon c A wacky comedy about whether or not you want your neighbors next door The late Jim Belushi, Kathryn Walker, Dan Aykroyd, and Cathy Moriarty star in the novel adaptation by Thomas Berger Earl and Enid live quietly in their suburban home with their daughter Elaine But the peaceful solitude is interrupted by a new couple that moves in next door; Vic whom is loud mouthed and his over sexed wife Ramona Earl is deeply annoyed by these people after a bizarre dinner date and almost near-death experience It's up to him to get them out of his life but what will it cost him? The music is so cartoonishly goofy but I guess that makes sense for a black comedy One man can grow tired of suburban life and ultimately wish for further excitement This is Belushi's last performance and he manages to make it his own pitting against Aykroyd in neighboring warfare It's not a great comedy with this kind of familiar plot But considering how much different it is from the book it ends on a more happier note with some unexpected optimism Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
