The Double Deuce is the meanest, loudest and rowdiest bar south of the Mason-Dixon Line, and Dalton (Patrick Swayze) has been hired to clean it up. He might not look like much, but the Ph.D.-educated bouncer proves he's more than capable -- busting the heads of troublemakers and turning the roadhouse into a jumping hot-spot. But Dalton's romance with the gorgeous Dr. Clay (Kelly Lynch) puts him on the bad side of cutthroat local big shot Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara).

Critics Consensus

Whether Road House is simply bad or so bad it's good depends largely on the audience's fondness for Swayze -- and tolerance for violently cheesy action.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting Silly, yet plays it straight, and everyone involved knows exactly the type of genre-pleaser they’re making... aspires to be nothing more and nothing less than a goofy experiment in translating the arc of the Western lone gunman to being a bouncer. Rated: 4/5 Mar 29, 2024 Full Review Sean T. Collins Decider ...it isn't just so bad it's good. In its own bad way, it really is good! Jul 12, 2019 Full Review Sheila Benson Los Angeles Times But in deep "Road House" country... and the undefined made crassly visible, there isn't a whiff of romance anywhere, any more than there's a single jot of common sense. Mar 27, 2019 Full Review Robert Roten Laramie Movie Scope While the basic story is predictable, the acting is solid and the music is great. This movie has a lot going for it. The Jeff Healey Band provides much of the movie's soundtrack, playing all through it. This band is really impressive. Rated: C+ Apr 13, 2024 Full Review Don Shanahan Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast A sweaty and brawny classic of excess and coolness. Mar 31, 2024 Full Review Josh Larsen LarsenOnFilm Not controlled or competent enough to work as a spoof, a serious action flick, or anything in between. No N It started out SO much stronger than the 2024 remake. I'd probably give it a solid 3 stars based on the first half or 3/4 of the film. I liked Sam Elliot and Jeff Healey quite a bit. I've never much liked Patrick Swayze, but I thought he was pretty good at first too, and the overall setup and dynamic was fun. And then it just turned into absurd "revenge porn" -- not, obviously, in the modern meaning of the non-consensual release of intimate photos of videos, but in the sense of "food porn", "gear porn", "violence porn", etc.: Over-the-top, extreme violence, driven purely by immature, unbridled revenge, clearly for the purpose of the glorification of brutally violent revenge, clearly meant for unhealthy members of the audience to enjoy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/27/25 Full Review Darren C A nostalgia review. Having just seen the rather bad Jake Gyllenhaal 'remake' I decided to seek out the original. Sure enough the likeability of Patrick Swayze immediately made the first Road House more relatable and watchable, well for 20 minutes or so. After that we descend in to a strange 80s mullet laden homage to 1950s westerns and the whole thing becomes palpably ridiculous. This is the issue revisiting things you once thought were ok, my wife convinced me recently that a baked bean and corn beef toastie was fantastic because she loved it so much as a teenager. Well we made one and it was bloody awful which sums up both the new and old iterations of this movie, cosy past memories cannot be trusted! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/24/25 Full Review Fan B The original Road House was poorly received by critics when it first came out, (when do critics actually applaud anything anyways?) Road House had a pretty solid box office return. Road House made $30 million domestically in theaters in 1989, which, adjusted for inflation, is equivalent to about $75 million today. The film over the years became so well known for it's quotes and soundtrack. With the Jeff Healey Band carrying the film. Eventually Road House developed a cult fanbase and became a household film. And became famous enough for Hollywood to agree to a Reboot, which, like all reboots, failed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/19/25 Full Review Luiz A Clássico absoluto, vale a pena ser assistido. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review alan g Patrick Swayze as a PhD? That pushes the bounds of reality. Good action though. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review Frans B At that time, I loved it. Still better than the remake. Not textbook script and cinematography, but hey, who cares, if Swayze & Elliott was in a movie, it's gotta be great huh? Lots of wild, untamed and unfiltered action and some cheesy, though memorable 😜, one-liners. Never boring ... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
