The Double Deuce is the meanest, loudest and rowdiest bar south of the Mason-Dixon Line, and Dalton (Patrick Swayze) has been hired to clean it up. He might not look like much, but the Ph.D.-educated bouncer proves he's more than capable -- busting the heads of troublemakers and turning the roadhouse into a jumping hot-spot. But Dalton's romance with the gorgeous Dr. Clay (Kelly Lynch) puts him on the bad side of cutthroat local big shot Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara).

Critics Consensus

Whether Road House is simply bad or so bad it's good depends largely on the audience's fondness for Swayze -- and tolerance for violently cheesy action.

Silly, yet plays it straight, and everyone involved knows exactly the type of genre-pleaser they’re making... aspires to be nothing more and nothing less than a goofy experiment in translating the arc of the Western lone gunman to being a bouncer. Go to Full Review

But in deep "Road House" country... and the undefined made crassly visible, there isn't a whiff of romance anywhere, any more than there's a single jot of common sense. Go to Full Review

While the basic story is predictable, the acting is solid and the music is great. This movie has a lot going for it. The Jeff Healey Band provides much of the movie's soundtrack, playing all through it. This band is really impressive. Go to Full Review

A sweaty and brawny classic of excess and coolness. Go to Full Review

Not controlled or competent enough to work as a spoof, a serious action flick, or anything in between. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Dec 4 Watching Roadhouse, both Patrick Swayze’s original and Jake Gyllenhaal’s remake, shows how a classic action story can be revisited for modern audiences. The remake closely mirrors the original, though it adds some creative updates and modern pacing. Swayze’s charisma and presence make the original iconic, with fight scenes and swagger that still hold up. Gyllenhaal delivers an energetic performance, but he doesn’t fully capture the effortless cool of Swayze. The screenplay in both is functional but relies on action tropes, with the remake leaning on polished visuals and sharper choreography, while the original has a raw charm. Both films tell the same story—a skilled bouncer cleaning up a corrupt bar—but the remake adds tension and sleek direction. While neither may be a rewatch staple, the original is slightly stronger due to Swayze’s legendary performance, and the remake succeeds as a modern homage. Both are worth seeing for action fans. See more Franklin M Nov 7 After hearing about this movie for years I finally decided to watch it. I love Patrick Swayze and Kelly Lynch, but what a supreme waste of time. It is an almost scene-by-scene remake of the original Walking Tall, with a tough guy trying to clean up a dirty bar. Second, there is zero -- maybe less than zero -- chance that a physician would go for a guy like Dalton. I'm guessing that was why the made him a PhD -- to seem like a doctor would in any way be attracted to him -- since the PhD nonsense served no other purpose in the movie. There's a lot more wrong, but I'd just be beating a dead horse. See more James H Nov 2 Fun Movie, If ou train Martial arts this movie is a clear example of how not to through Kicks. I enjoyed it will watch it again, but yes all it really is, is a fun movie to watch. See more Romas M Oct 30 Greetings from Lithuania. "Road House" (1989) is a great guilty pleasure type of a movie. I do understand why critics hated it back in the day, but seen from the right angle this movie works - spectacularly. Story is simple yet effective. Acting is rough yet believable for this material. Patrick Swayze, Kelly Lynch, Sam Elliott - they all looks and sound great here. Sometimes looks can kill, and this film is a proof of it. Dialogs were sometimes corny yet memorable and well written. Action scenes are well made - fight sequences do looks real and better then in many movies. Directing was solid - for me personally this movie at its running time 1 h 50 min never drags. Music in great - it really captures the place and spirit of the film. The bar "Double Deuce" looks like a character in this film. Overall, "Road House" is a pure late 80's action flick. Its corny but it does for entertain a lot. There is a style in this movie - it is a film like no other in a sense - and in a good way. With some light alcohol involved, "Road House" is a pure movie magic. See more Daniel N Oct 2 How have I not watched this movie up until now?! What an awesome movie. Classic Patrick Swayze and classic 80's. If you like old movies then this is a ripper. No idea why it has such bad reviews from critics. I'm guessing the critics are mostly ugly, angry lesbians or fat losers that can't get laid. The type that hate a good looking, strong male lead. See more Savannah G @Sgudino93 Sep 8 I mean, the poses and bar fights and drama from and softness of this '80s movie were pretty classic. I would watch again just for the one-liners and the angles in which this film was shot - and honestly, to watch a Patrick and Sam Elliott combination is really the reason I enjoyed this film. The bar Fights were reminiscent of old westerns- no plot line and nothing made sense at all. How did any of these things get to happen? But in all honesty, I really enjoyed this generational-specific movie. See more Read all reviews
