Five-year-old Seryozha (Borya Barkhalov) lives with his mother, Maryana (Irina Skobtseva), in a small Russian town. When Maryana marries Korostelyov (Sergei Bondarchuk), Seryozha initially mistrusts his new stepfather, but he quickly wins over the young boy with gifts and kindness. After Maryana gives birth to a new child, Seryozha becomes sick and is left with an aunt. When Maryana and Korostelyov are signed up to transfer to another farm, Seryozha is determined not to be left behind.
