Disney's first fully live action movie is a fairly accurate retelling of the Robert Louis Stevenson novel. Robert Newton does a great job as Long John Silver and also establishes the pirate talk that we are so used to in all forms of media. Bobby Driscoll also does a good job as Jim Hawkins and the dynamic between the two is believable, which is a key to the telling of this tale. There is some Hollywooding up of the characters for modern audiences, especially Hawkins who is portrayed as a modern kid. I think that was done intentionally to allow kids of the time to put themselves in that role. Because of this I think it would be harder for kids today to do the same.

A rip-roaring, swashbuckling, seaworthy adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel, anchored (pun not intended) by the performances of a bright-eyed, wet-around-the-ears Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins, and the seminal (perhaps the definitive) performance of Robert Newton as Long John Silver.

1950's Treasure Island is a terrific adaptation of the eponymous Robert Louis Stevenson novel. It was the first ever live-action Disney film and one of the studio's most underrated features. It should have been longer in length and livelier in its approach, but the characterization was outstanding and the performances are excellent across the board with Robert Newton and Bobby Driscoll being the standouts. The production design, cinematography and score are all terrific in this faithful and wonderfully endearing adventure flick.
