Pauline Kael The New Yorker One of the most sophisticated slapstick comedies ever made. Apr 7, 2016 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader No director ever matched Preston Sturges's way of blending low slapstick and literate dialogue comedy. Nov 12, 2007 Full Review Bosley Crowther New York Times It is too bad that Preston Sturges is not compelled by law to turn out at least one movie -- maybe two -- a year. For nobody makes films as he does. Rated: 4/5 Mar 25, 2006 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills A flop for the genius writer-director Preston Sturges, but also his last great movie. Feb 1, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review In the last great film by Preston Sturges, the writer-director's signature wit and slapstick come together with an hysterical sense of the macabre, forming a comedy far ahead of its time. Rated: 4/4 Feb 14, 2022 Full Review Christopher Kane Modern Screen You get a little bit of everything here, and it's all Preston Sturges'. Jun 29, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Alec B Highly innovative for its time but I'm more taken in by Sturges' ability to be so nakedly honest while never forgetting to funny. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Audience Member Highly innovative for its time but I'm more taken in by Sturges' ability to be so nakedly honest while never forgetting to funny. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member It was two thirds through and aside from the ridiculous English hammy voice it was going so well. Then weirdly they threw in this slapstick comedy sketch that wasn't funny and ended the film in sop when it screamed out for a twist. Eurgh so disappointing after a hood set up. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Para verla con paciencia, solo para amantes del cine clàsico. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member It was OK, definitely not as great as all the reviews state. First part was a bit slow, got better towards the end. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Preston Sturges attempts to combine his salacious wit with a character study on the psychological anguish of a composer (Harrison), which is bold but doesn't quite make it to masterpiece material. I think it would have been better if we had seen how paranoid or delusional Harrison's character was before conducting the big symphony, where he is consumed with his wife's infidelity; worth watching for Harrison's performance, but the most of the supporting characters have no reason to be there.
