Audience Member Pretty darn atrocious. Honestly, I don’t know what I could have expected from a film with this premise but yeah. I wasn’t alive in the 70’s but it certainly seemed….. weird? Best way to put it. The plot itself seemed very unfocused and early in the movie they blow up the stage at a graduation ceremony. That’s actually pretty funny. I’d like to do that. There’s also weird daydream sequences that are supposed to tie in with that Bobby is feeling in that moment, but I thought it was dumb. Honestly just disappointed. I only watched this because every time I searched “Van Wilder” on letterboxd id see this movie recommended before it. Only reason to watch this indie film is to see Danny DeVito. This was definitely shot before his “Taxi” days so that’s pretty cool. 1/5 stars. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/19/25 Full Review Audience Member If only negative stars were possible. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Matthew D Danny DeVito in an early role is about the only reason to subject yourself to it. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/21 Full Review chip c THE 70's! yeah dude! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It even has a waterbed. Bobby is a simple boy that decides he'd prefer to buy a supped up van for graduation than go to college. He uses the van to try and scoop up chicks, hang out and get high and drunk. He meets a special girl, but she doesn't agree with his teenage behaviors or trying to constantly get her drunk or high to have sex with her. Can Bobby overcome his immature behaviors and get some or will his efforts be for not? "I thought this wasn't supposed to be dangerous." Sam Grossman delivers The Van in his directorial debut. The storyline for this picture is pretty average and wasn't as good as other films in this genre such as Porkys or Animal House. The acting and comedic content was below expectations but the vehicles and settings were cool. The acting was mediocre and the cast includes Stuart Goetz, Marcie Barkin, Danny Devito, and Deborah White. "It's as good as gold." "Nothing is as good as gold." I am a grindhouse and drive-in fan and this is a classic drive-in picture (and is part of the Dugan series from the 70s). This is a below average grindhouse car movie. The premise is disappointing and the execution is a bit clumsy and low budget feeling. I would love to go to the pizza spot from this movie, and I did enjoy the settings and cars in the movie; but other than that, I'd skip this picture. "May you and this van live happily ever after." Grade: C- Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw this at the drive-in when it first came out. It seemed like a better movie then. It also made me want to get a custom van. (Ended up with a couple of vans) lol Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Read all reviews
