Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times No matter what impression the ads give, this isn't even remotely intended as an action film. It's a set piece. It's a ballet of stylized male violence. Rated: 2/4 Mar 7, 2021 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader The Warriors admits to failures of conception (occasional) and dialogue (frequent), but there is much of value in Hill's visual elaboration of the material. Mar 7, 2021 Full Review Pauline Kael The New Yorker There's a night-blooming, psychedelic shine to the whole baroque movie. Jan 3, 2018 Full Review Bianca Garner Filmotomy Hill understood what teenagers liked, and as a result, he made a film that they could identify with. Oct 3, 2024 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed The cast here is one of the main reasons why the film is such a classic. James Remar here is fantastic and really makes his presence known and his talent shine. Rated: 4/5 Dec 14, 2023 Full Review Mitchell Beaupre Paste Magazine While the race-against-the-clock narrative propulsion is positively gripping, the smaller elements laced throughout The Warriors leave the most lasting impression. Alison F I was born after this movie came out, so I have no nostalgia-based bias. I watched it for the first time a few months ago, and have watched it probably dozens of times again. I found it through the album by Eisa Davis. While the movie is definitely out of date, because it came out almost 50 years ago, meaning some of the lines and plot points are a bit controversial by today's standards, I truly have nothing against it. It's not supposed to be perfect or morally "good". It's a controversial subject objectively, but it handles it in a way that makes it feel less heavy. It doesn't glamorize gang violence in any way, even some of the main characters are clearly meant to be disliked or criticized at some times. But you still root for them. It still humanizes them. It genuinely changed my life and I haven't stopped talking about it since. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/29/25 Full Review Nick O If there’s one thing Walter Hill knows, it’s how to generate some gritty urban cinematic violence and this teenage street gang cult classic satisfies that exact exploitation itch to the fullest! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/25/25 Full Review john h For critics and adult audiences, The Warriors is an edgy and awkward, pulp film with alien-personality characters. The response to teenagers at the time was extremely influential and not the typical film they would have imagined many to be. The lacking of dialogue only adds to the atmospheric silence of the night and synth instruments that are fairly impressionable. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review Daniel Z Very much of its time, but with an edginess that set it apart from its contemporaries, Walter Hill’s ‘The Warriors’ still remains a somewhat uncompromising view of gang life through a lens, and it’s this bleakness that permeates the narrative in a way many mainstream films fail to. Shot primarily during the twilight hours, the cinematography belies its budgetary restraints, and with a tasty soundtrack to keep things moving, there’s no surprise that it became the cult favourite it is today. While the premise turns upon violence and criminal mentality, it’s the genuine sense of isolation and hopelessness that speaks the loudest, and so for those construing ‘The Warriors’ as mindless and brutish, set aside your expectations and give it a chance, because you may just learn that not all gang movies seek to glorify bloodshed, but instead tell a tale of circumstance over choice, and how the struggle to overcome oppression can only be won when people act together, no matter what. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/05/25 Full Review Olivia J The theatrical cut is still superior to the director’s cut as the comic book panels detract from the atmosphere and sure, some of the acting is a bit dodgy and the dialogue is a bit naff in places but this movie has energy to burn. Lets get to it, boppers. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/31/25 Full Review Craig H Watched this alot over the years and this time made me realise how dated it is and how bad some of the acting is and how its abit slow at times but despite that its still has that old school film charm to it, the music is cool, the characters are fun and I still rate is as a solid piece of entertainment(and I love the PS2 game) and quite ahead of its time in some ways. I think if this re made in this day and age with some modernised updates it would be cool. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
