Myles Standish St. Louis Post-Dispatch Marred by several cornball scenes involving Lucille Ball, but on the whole it is warm, gently humorous and poignant. May 1, 2024 Full Review Renata Adler New York Times A leering, uncertain, embarrassing, protracted little comedy-neatly divided into television inter-commercial periods, each terminated by an abysmal, inevitable joke-quite anti sex and pro compulsive procreation. May 9, 2005 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times As a genuinely amusing family film, it will do nicely. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review James Plath Family Home Theater It's a little bit of a stretch to accept 57-year-old Ball and 63-year-old Fonda as fertile parents, but they still make for believable parents once you get over the initial shock. Rated: B- Jan 16, 2018 Full Review Matt Brunson Creative Loafing Forget that awful 2005 version starring Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo. For the real deal, check out the delightful 1968 original. RICHARD S Absolutely wonderful! This is the most heartwarming and enjoyable of Lucille Ball's feature films since at least 1950. Ball and Fonda (previously paired in "The Big Street" back in the 1942) have great chemistry and the light comedy artistry that make this a truly wonderful family film. Story writers, (Madelyn Davis and Bob Carroll Jr. ) also wrote for I Love Lucy television series, knew how to play to her strengths, but stopped short of the Lucy slapstick she is known for. Both lead actors play their roles credibly with light humor. And, we are reminded how much potential Fonda had for comedy, utilized so little in the latter part of his career. If you want a nice, warm enjoyable movie night, this one is ageless and bound to please! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/25 Full Review John S The movie meant well perhaps, but it being 1968 tried to be edgier, grittier, darker, to differentiate itself from light-hearted movies from just a couple of years earlier. It has a few mildly amusing scenes, but it's by no means a comedy. The script though, is just a jumbled mess, seemingly put together by a non-communicative committee. I find it surprising that this mess was even greenlighted in this form. It's mildly entertaining but it's far more thought-provoking for the messy script. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Funny. Like Cheaper By The Dozen but better. Entertaining, wholesome, kinda strange on the plot front. like almost no plot at all. just kinda 9 months in the life. decent writing, however, the audio post and score were severely lacking. Also Lucille Ball is freaky. 63/100 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member A classic that should never have been a remake. From the top down the casting can't be beat and the screenplay is terrific. One of those movies you can watch a dozen times and still not get tired of it.
