Audience Member The lugubrious atmosphere, the fluid camerawork, the impressive production design and the magnificent location all add panache to a well told (by David Epstein) and well directed (by Jeannot "Somewhere in Time" Szwarc) tale--A Fairly Faithful Adaptation of the Poe Tale!! First published in 1841 and is often cited as the first detective story. The main character of C. Auguste Dupin (George C. Scott) was the predecessor of famous fictional sleuths Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. Scott, center A "detective" (the word detective was not invented yet) comes out of retirement to help his daughter's fiance prove that he did not commit a series of murders. Bored from a forced retirement which he regrets not fighting, Dupin was a reknowned Parisian police officer who solved hundreds of crimes through logic way before A. Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Scott as the famous but now retired police "detective" August Dupin "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe published in Graham's Magazine in 1841. It has been recognized as the first detective story; Poe referred to it as one of his "tales of ratiocination". A made for TV film, it's the second one since 1968 to show there**. But do NOT let the television aspect depress you, this is a quality film with excellent Victorian sets. The atmosphere is good and at 90 minutes or so, it's n... 80% The movie does a really good job of evoking the atmosphere of the tale and Scott performs wonderfully as Dupin. 100% Excellent TV movie, I was more than a little surprised by how good it was. It looked great and is by far one of the best made for TV movies I've ever seen. George C Scott is always such a presence on screen. If you get a chance please watch. The atmosphere is good and at 90 minutes or so, it's not too long for those who usually get bored with period pieces. As for the mystery, there are some plot points missing, and the climactic scene involving the murderer is rather underwhelming, but all in all, Poe would have likely been satisfied with the attention to detail given by the filmmakers. Rated 3/5 Stars •  Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Por irónico que parezca, el principal obstáculo que tiene esta película para ser calificada positivamente es que está basada en el clásico de Edgar Allan Poe: quienes hayan leído el cuento antes de ver la película (todos, prácticamente) no dejarán de echar de menos varios pasajes ni evitarán la comparación entre las imágenes que la lectura de esta obra recreaba en la mente y lo que se ve en pantalla. Hay algunas escenas que no se comprenderían sin el previo conocimiento del clásico y otras que no transmiten el impacto deseado, sobre todo aquellas donde finalmente interviene el simio, el cual pudo ser mejor logrado y que incluso podría causar risa. Si bien fueron pocas las locaciones incluídas en la filmación (las necesarias, creo yo), la caracterización de la época en que se desarrolla la historia se logró de manera aceptable. El director recurre a planos generales para hacer transición entre secuencias. Desconozco si ésta fue una producción exclusiva para la televisión, pero la fotografía en general delata que la producción data de los 80's. Val Kilmer, muy joven, tiene una actuación sobria, acorde al perfil de su personaje. Se agradece la presencia de Rebecca de Mornay.
