Neil Jillett The Age (Australia) The comedy is not always funny, and the melodrama can never be taken seriously; but Almodóvar's skill in swinging his film between the two is admirable in its cheekiness. Sep 26, 2024 Full Review Nick Schager Lessons of Darkness Not funny, suspenseful, or original. Rated: C- May 4, 2005 Full Review Janet Maslin New York Times Unlike this director's best work, High Heels has no real mirth and not even enough energy to keep it lively. Rated: 2/5 Aug 30, 2004 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) Little by little, High Heels enrapt the spectator in its sly delirium. [Full review in Spanish] Jun 20, 2023 Full Review Terry Francis Southern Voice (Atlanta) It's like a drug-laced cross between Autumn Sonata, Mildred Pierce and Madam X, as directed by Douglas Sirk (after a snifter of R.W. Fassbinder) and produced by Ross Hunter, [complete with] lavish costumes and overblown production values. Rated: 4/4 May 9, 2023 Full Review Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine Trying to combine drama and comedy in one movie often results in a bittersweet compromise. But in High Heels, Spanish director Pedro Almodovar mixes farce and passion in a way that heightens both extremes. Oct 9, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Jeff M Almodovar is point blank my favorite working film director. He is one of the very few auteurs whose movies are wholly unique and in a world of their own. You know immediately when you're watching a movie by Pedro. He specializes in overdramatic and outrageous plots, colorful and over the top production values and especially eccentric and unforgettable female characters. And while this doesn't even come close to reaching the unforgettable peaks of his masterpieces like BAD EDUCATION and TALK TO HER, this is still a highly enjoyable roller coaster ride involving family conflict, murder, show business, deceit and all kinds of twists and surprises. American audiences raised on cookie-cutter assembly-line motion pictures may have trouble adjusting to something like this. I can't imagine any American director who would be able to achieve this type of outrageousness while still keeping a toe or two in reality - somewhat. Visually stunning and great performances by the two leading ladies. There are some tonal issues here between the dramatic and the comedic - but this is overall one of Almodovar's under-appreciated offerings. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Comparing with other films of Almódovar, High Heels is definitely a more "normal" one.
