      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Last of the Mohicans is a breathless romantic adventure that plays loose with James Fenimore Cooper's novel -- and comes out with a richer action movie for it.

Grant R An uninspired confusing mess of a movie. If I had to summarize it the it was two, badly choreographed fight scenes with a siege in the middle. Oh yeah and there was that whole ending thing with tones of people falling off cliffs that was meant to be dramatic but was actually vaguely comical. You know it's bad when the one from the 1920s was more entertaining Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/28/24 Full Review Jacob B Not as amazing as some make it out to be with characters lacking development and the love story that wasn't in the original being a bit intrusive. The fact that this is Michael Mann's most well-known film in certain circles probably contributes further to my feelings of hype backlash. Of course, while I haven't seen enough of his films for me to have much of an opinion on him, it doesn't change the fact that this film stands out primarily because of how disconnected it feels from the rest of his filmography. Mann is mostly known for crime dramas and while he has branched out to other genres, this film feels the most like an oddball due to its historical fiction roots when even the period pieces in Mann's filmography don't go any farther back than the 20th century and also, on a minor note, is Mann's only film to have a title that has more than two words, some made-for-TV prison drama called The Jericho Mile notwithstanding. But that's not to say The Last of the Mohicans is bad. Far from it. The actors deliver strong performances, the score is amazing, the cinematography is sharp and crystal-clear, the action's decent though I've seen better choreography of this type of action in The Patriot and the third act is where the film truly redeems itself. The climax is powerful filmmaking with the music that had me thinking "oh, so this is where that music's from" all culminating in a tearjerking, bittersweet final scene. And the "Promentory" scene is done without any dialogue. I was hoping I would The Last of the Mohicans more than I did given how it seems to be the only Michael Mann film in my social circles that people have actually seen or heard of but I certainly didn't hate the film, though I do understand why Mann might have never made a film like this again, regardless of his thoughts on the finished film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review George C Great film. A bit dated though. Does that annoying thing old films do, where it does not make it obvious who each character is (and for no good reason). You end up trying to work out who is who. Regardless, worth the watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/08/24 Full Review Mark C Shocked at how bad this is, two thirds of the film are very uninteresting. They play the great, main theme song so many times that they end up ruining it. I lost count, must have been over 15 times, even playing it when the film starts, which is just ridiculous. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/24 Full Review Alec B I think Mann strikes a good balance of arthouse style and mainstream Action/Romance plot even if the characters lack solid development. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Alec C War is not a place where honor is considered, especially if it takes place during the French and Indian War! Two brothers and their father protect the daughters of a British colonel when a rouge warrior attempts to capture them in revenge against the colonel. Emotionally stirring and violently epic, it's as if a picture in a history book has been brought to life! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Catherine Dunphy Toronto Star Anchored by a performance of almost Zen-like calm and focus by a lithe Daniel Day-Lewis and another of muted but fierce intensity by Madeleine Stowe, it is nothing less than a cinematic second coming. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Alexander Walker London Evening Standard A film that restores to the screen what it used to do best: grandeur of scale, intimacy of people, generosity of emotion, a subtext of saga and legend. Oh hell, what’s the word for it? Yes, “epic.” Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Eleanor Ringel Cater Atlanta Journal-Constitution In a sense, Mr. Mann has returned to the very roots of motion pictures. With its tumultuous flow of music and images, “Mohicans” is like a long-lost something from the era of silent movies. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Terry Lawson Dayton Daily News The rest of us can revel in what is certainly the best historically minded Hollywood movie since Glory, one that respects the intelligence of its story, its characters and its audience. Rated: 4/4 Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Arion Berger L.A. Weekly As an amoral and anti-political period piece, deeply invested in the futility of war, the movie's brute splendor is all the more moving because it's so extravagantly doomed. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Hal Lipper Tampa Bay Times The Last of the Mohicans is grand entertainment. Romantic, exciting, though unremittingly violent at times, it is rich in frontier lore and in its respect for the land that conquering settlers too often take for granted.
