The last members of a dying Native American tribe, the Mohicans -- Uncas (Eric Schweig), his father Chingachgook (Russell Means), and his adopted half-white brother Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) -- live in peace alongside British colonists. But when the daughters (Madeleine Stowe, Jodhi May) of a British colonel are kidnapped by a traitorous scout, Hawkeye and Uncas must rescue them in the crossfire of a gruesome military conflict of which they wanted no part: the French and Indian War.

Critics Consensus

The Last of the Mohicans is a breathless romantic adventure that plays loose with James Fenimore Cooper's novel -- and comes out with a richer action movie for it.

Catherine Dunphy Toronto Star Anchored by a performance of almost Zen-like calm and focus by a lithe Daniel Day-Lewis and another of muted but fierce intensity by Madeleine Stowe, it is nothing less than a cinematic second coming. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Alexander Walker London Evening Standard A film that restores to the screen what it used to do best: grandeur of scale, intimacy of people, generosity of emotion, a subtext of saga and legend. Oh hell, what’s the word for it? Yes, “epic.” Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Eleanor Ringel Cater Atlanta Journal-Constitution In a sense, Mr. Mann has returned to the very roots of motion pictures. With its tumultuous flow of music and images, “Mohicans” is like a long-lost something from the era of silent movies. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Terry Lawson Dayton Daily News The rest of us can revel in what is certainly the best historically minded Hollywood movie since Glory, one that respects the intelligence of its story, its characters and its audience. Rated: 4/4 Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Arion Berger L.A. Weekly As an amoral and anti-political period piece, deeply invested in the futility of war, the movie's brute splendor is all the more moving because it's so extravagantly doomed. Dec 15, 2023 Full Review Hal Lipper Tampa Bay Times The Last of the Mohicans is grand entertainment. Romantic, exciting, though unremittingly violent at times, it is rich in frontier lore and in its respect for the land that conquering settlers too often take for granted. Adam D. Epic. I remember watching this at the age of 13 and it stirring all these emotions, and somehow every re-watch pulls on those same heart strings. It’s a beautiful love story. The soundtrack is iconic, that phrase is thrown around too much but it may be the best score ever written for a film. Cinematography is amazing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/28/25 Full Review Sabrina B Ok , do Im born in 1989 … I remember I was about 6-7ish old when I just glanced my mom and her friend watched this movie on VHS . Mind to let you know I haven’t understood English then , and reading subtitles was more or less hard for me ,but rest assured I left all my toys aside and watched movie until end without blinking. My mom was so confused and amazed at same time . When I was in my teenage years I researched it multiple times , and I still can watch it over and over again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Leprechaun K Michael Mann at his peak with outstanding performances by Day-Lewis and Stowe. The wonderful score complements the film perfectly. An all time classic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/24/25 Full Review Practical S I would give it another star if they changed up the sound track a little. the movie had good explosions and iffy fight scenes. i wish they had another song because it really effected my watching experience. 2 hours of the same song of loud flutes... Also i think they couldve chopped down the fight scenes to be a little shorter. there was a fight scene that went on for a good 18 minutes. They shouldnt have dragged out the scenes for as long because it ended up making them less tense and rather boring. also chill out on the staring. period, thanks for reading. >_< Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/09/25 Full Review Sergey B Timeless classic - the actors, the heroism, romanticism, the spatial soundtrack are tasty treat to eyes and ears. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/14/25 Full Review Van D I saw this film as a teenager when it released in theaters, and it still hasn't lost any of its power. A truly unique and moving experience you don't want to miss. One of the few films that may justifiably claim to be better than the book. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
