Everything might go right on a project, everyone might do their job correctly, and still...meh. It could happen. This film looks at an act of heroism perpetrated by a louse, a schmuck. How do people react to that? Solid credentials down the line, this one is surefire, so what happened? I guess that no one on the production team correctly estimated the impact of having an unlikeable character as central to a story about family and that Hoffman played his part as that turd too well. You will be impressed by the quality presented on the screen, and then you will forget what you just saw.

The film is quite quirky and funny thanks to good performances. The film is underrated and a forgotten if you enjoy Hoffman then you'll love him here. The film is half drama and comedy which works well for the most part. I was quite drawn to the film thanks to the story and direction. The film is slowly told like an old fashion story and its the grand storytelling that keeps the plot moving. Hoffman is superb in the lead and always gives a strong turn. Andy Garcia is quite low key as is geena Davis, the film slows down and moves into melodrama while Hoffman is off screen. If you enjoy a film with a backbone then this film will interest you. The ending is very hilarious and suits the film very well. The humour during the plane crash scene is an acquired taste but if you enjoy Cohen films then you'll find something here

It's not the best picture of the director, but Stephen Frears' comedy presents a good concept, just like the screenplay and that make me identify oneself with the character Bernie LaPlante (Dustin Hoffman) in some bad moments. We see that Frears, is trying bring to the contemporary cinema the Frank Capra style, but that don't help very much Hero. Fresh.

a timidly predictable and tiresome film that without it's moments, it's not that much good without it. D+
