Pittsburgh Markham (John Wayne) is a coal-miner with backwoods roots, but he has ambition. He's out to get ahead any way he can, whether by forcing friend Cash (Randolph Scott) to box, stringing along the glamorous Josie (Marlene Dietrich), swindling a suit from a surly tailor (Shemp Howard), forging the signature of a steel mill owner or greasing up to a steel magnate (Samuel S. Hinds) by marrying his daughter (Louise Allbritton). Eventually, Markham seeks redemption for his ruthlessness.

Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …a two-fisted, wholesome comic romp that gives big stars a chance to shine under the unifying flag of patriotic endeavour… Rated: 4/5 Nov 30, 2023 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com The weakest of the 3 films Wayne made with Dietrich, a WWII morality tale about greed and redemption--the film was released exactly one year after Pearl Harbor, which features as a plot point in the triangular saga in which Randolph Scott is third wheel Rated: C+ May 3, 2007 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member #3 of pics john wayne randolh scott & marlene dietrich made together and my fave of the three Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member usually the good guy in most films, john wayne makes it quite clear there is nothing lovable about him as a self centered business tycoon in the mining industry in this wonderful film. you will love to hate him in pittsburgh. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Charming cast and some wonderful cinematography, but the script is hammy and dated because of its need to deliver a patriotic rallying call. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member some pretty solid acting, John Wayne goes against form as a power hungry business man, and is pretty good at it, the framing device is a bit iffy since it's telling a story that everyone present knows... and the sudden hit of patriotism at the end is about as subtle as a flying brick, but good fun Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member C'est quand même merveilleux les films de propagandes. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member One of Waynes worst performances. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
