s r Not nearly as good as it should have been. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I think the only thing this movie does wrong is insufficiently communicating to the audience that it is surreal allegory, not necessarily to be taken at face value. The Orson Welles one does a better job in that regard, but overall I think this one is better. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Turning an unfinished novel into a movie? Smart. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie has it all. It is absurd, existential, philosophical and psychological. Also great acting performances by Kyle MacLachlan and Anthony Hopkins accompanied with beautiful music and a nice scenery of Prague! The Trial (by Franz Kafka) is my favorite book and if you haven't read it yet, then at least watch this movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member How comes this movie is so poorly rated? The perfect screening!I'm a big fan of the book,I think Kafka is a genius. This movie followed each step of the book,so why should I not give a big grade? Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Didn't really like it, then again I never really liked the book anyway. The films contains some brilliant actors and it's quite faithful to the novel. Although a great cast can only take you so far in my estimation. Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times It is a solid, respectable screen adaptation, but it lacks the madness. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review James Berardinelli ReelViews Rated: 2/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Brian D. Johnson Maclean's Magazine The idea of Kafka's spirit conspiring with Pinter's language seems almost too diabolical for words. But in the playwright's new screen version of the novelist's 1925 classic, The Trial, their sensibilities dovetail beautifully.
