Steven D. Greydanus Decent Films Fairbanks is the most exuberantly athletic of Robin Hoods, for sheer physicality perhaps outdoing even Errol Flynn's definitive performance. Fairbanks's third swashbuckler… in some ways the ideal Fairbanks vehicle. Dustin D Douglas Fairbank's Robin Hood, like many other (relatively) recent Robin Hood tales spends too much time on his back story as a Crusader (a relatively recent addition to Robin Hood's legend), and then rushes through his adventures in Sherwood Forest with his Merry Men. The Merry Men are hardly introduced--the names of characters we're expected to already know just appear on the screen. However, the movie does a great job with production design. The castles and castle towns look massive and sturdy, and Sherwood Forest looks like a real place. Despite my gripe about the first half of the movie being dedicated to a back-story, it was still fun stuff. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/23 Full Review georgan g Love this film from several perspectives. Smiling at what we now see as over acting. Frowning at how long the patriarchy has been embedded. Amazed at the physicality of Douglas Fairbanks Sr. Always fun to see what my grandparents could have watched (I'm 74)! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The best thrilling and inspiring movie ever made! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review kevin w Douglas Fairbanks. Leaping. Running. Jumping. Swinging. Climbing. Fighting. If there's a more flamboyant way to do a thing then (count on it) that's the way he'll do it. Every entrance is big. Grand. Sweeping. Big. Bigger. Biggest. It's parody nowadays. And yet. The grandeur and heroism of this tale cannot be denied. That it set precedent for every action/adventure tale since ... ever, is a hard point to quibble, as well. Pretty darn good for a little guy from Denver, CO, eh?
