Adventurer Leo Vincey (Randolph Scott) leads a crew to the Arctic in search of an element that grants immortality. When they reach their destination, the ancient city of Kor, they are brought before the ruler, known as She (Helen Gahagan). She mistakes Vincey for one of his ancestors whom she had met and loved. Sensing that Tanya (Helen Mack) also has feelings for Vincey, She orders Tanya offered as a human sacrifice. Vincey must overcome the intoxicating spell of She in order to save his crew.

Helen Gahagan is outstanding in this film, it is hard to believe that she only ever did this film, but returned to stage and singing. Randolph Scott, Helen Mack and Nigel Bruce are also outstanding. The sets are breathtaking, the music is wonderful and a wonderful story of a woman who has bathed in a flame of immortality awaits her lover to return 500 years later.

I'd only seen the Hammer production until the other day. Although Hammer did a wonderful job, this '35 version is so much more atmospheric. It's obvious that Disney borrowed the image of the wicked queen in Snow White from this film. Performances are outstanding, special effects are incredible. I highly recommend this stylish, escapist adventure yarn.

I saw the restored colorised version. The production design was impressive, but the screenplay and pacing were a bit weak. Overall a disappointment. Max Steiner's score was pretty good.
