Audience Member This...is not a good film. Feels very dated and silly; there is nothing remotely scary here. Could only be recommended to "men of culture" who seek an early Kate Beckinsale performance to appreciate. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review Steve D You have seen it all before and the ending is unsatisfying. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review the s Kind of shocked at how low the ratings are on this film. It's wel done, subtle, creepy and effective from the standpoint of a classic haunted house film. The investigation angle provided a fresh take on the old formula and Aidan Quinn does and incredible job as the skeptic investigator looking to solve the mystery of the grandmother and her house. I'm guessing this one didn't have enough jump scares for the average American…keep in mind this was produced and released at the height of moviegoers fascination and fetishization of mindless slasher movies that were teeming with gaudy effects and a jump scare every 10 minutes. Anything without a hockey mask or finger razors was considered "slow" then and likely "slow" now in the era of the generic torture film. Americans simply shifted their fetishization from slasher to torture. Clearly a complex and complicated American horror audience. I know. Anyway, this is one of the better haunted house films of the 90s despite the low ratings and a hidden gem if you're looking for something a little less mindless than the (let's be honest here) garbage most studios were producing under the guise of "horror" during that decade. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member What a horrible version of a fine book. They took everything that was scary about the book, the evil dog, the main character's evil sister, a forbidding mansion, his fight with alcoholism and replaced it with a story about family incest. Kate Beckinsdale is stunning, but not scary at all, I wonder if the director even read the book. Too bad, someone could redo this film into a classic horror flick. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member just brilliant acting, shot and atmosphere. One time a film smashes the book. Take note, the second book is far better and the third is perhaps the worst you'll ever read Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed this film and this period. What a quirky ending! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
