Mike Clark USA Today As a forum for its actors and for the big-screen directorial debut of multi-Emmy winner Gregory Hoblit, the film is up to the job. William R. Excellent movie. Kept me on the edge of my seat even though it’s a court room drama. It’s a movie that sticks with you. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/25 Full Review Jeff P. Primal Fear follows Martin Vail, a confident and high profile defense attorney who seizes the opportunity to take on a pro bono case involving the brutal murder of a beloved local archbishop. What begins as a chance for publicity quickly becomes far more complicated as Vail digs into the details. His courtroom opponent is an old flame, adding personal tension as the two battle for control of the narrative. The case centers on Aaron Stampler, a quiet, stuttering young man with a Boy Scout appearance who is found covered in blood near the scene. He insists he remembers nothing, and his shy demeanor seems at odds with the horrific crime he is accused of. As Vail investigates, he uncovers troubling secrets surrounding the archbishop and learns that multiple people may have had motives, casting more doubt on Aaron’s guilt. Throughout the trial, new revelations shift suspicion from one angle to another, keeping both Vail and the audience guessing. Vail begins to suspect Aaron suffers from dissociative episodes, and his defense strategy pivots as he tries to prove Aaron’s condition in court. Edward Norton, at just 19 years old, delivers a phenomenal breakout performance as Aaron, showing incredible range and bringing eerie unpredictability to the character. His presence elevates the film and keeps the tension high from start to finish. The mystery remains engaging all the way to the end, but nothing prepares you for the final twist, which reframes everything that came before it and lingers long after the credits roll. It drives home the unsettling truth at the heart of the film: justice does not always prevail, and the courtroom is not always where truth wins. However, the movie is not without flaws. At times the pacing can drag, particularly in the middle portion where the legal back-and-forth becomes repetitive. Some supporting characters feel underdeveloped, and their motivations are not always clear. The film also leans heavily on formulaic legal-thriller tropes, which can make portions feel predictable despite the shocking ending. A few scenes stretch believability, especially as the plot becomes more psychological, which may take some viewers out of the story. Still, these shortcomings are outweighed by the gripping performances and narrative tension. Primal Fear remains a compelling legal thriller with layered characters and a finale that leaves a lasting impression. 76/100 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/20/25 Full Review Deepika V Loved this movie so much! Stellar acting for the first movie. You don’t even see the sudden switch from Aaron to Roy, it happens so fast. Terrifying and confusing Richard Gere in his first movie is not something everyone can do, but Ed Norton did it. The unnerving facial expressions, the dialogues, the stuttering, and the final reveal: "We were just dancing Marty." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/18/25 Full Review Kenzie C It was a good movie and i enjoyed watching it. It didn’t drag much which is nice as most longer movies do. In my opinion, it’s a slow burn movie and the plot twist isn’t that surprising however I would recommend, especially to aspiring lawyers or judges. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review Elena K I adore this movie so much, and I think that the acting played a huge part in that Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/25 Full Review Billy H.
