What to Know

Critics Consensus

Disney's take on the Victor Hugo classic is dramatically uneven, but its strong visuals, dark themes, and message of tolerance make for a more-sophisticated-than-average children's film.

Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal You're quickly won over by the movie's subversive wit, swept along by its narrative bravado and its enormous visual energy. This new "Hunchback" is a triumph on its own terms, and on any other terms that might come to mind. The entire film, however, fails to land with a distracted and ineffective voice. Jan 15, 2023 Full Review Cory Woodroof 615 Film This is the darkest “G” movie of all time! Tina S It's bold but not perfect. Frollo is one the most endearing characters in Disney's runtime for his mature themes and exuberant take on the church's corruption, one of the main contributions why this movie leaves a good taste on many. The Hellfire song sent shivers, genius rendition to Frollo's character. Though despite such a strong installment of an antagonist, the other characters fall weak. They all propose a basic understanding of a general "all is equal" but the way they go about it leaves me perplexed. It was as if they weren't sure how to stick the Esmerelda and Quasimodo narrative just right so they decided to scrap it all together and add a forgettable addition. The judgement of Quasimodo's character seems inconsistent as well, shearing empathy of a kind the next but then seems to bare envy the next. The story's pacing is solid though, immersed me in the story just enough. However, the songs are just immaculate, have I mentioned 'Hellfire'? Oh I think I did! It's great that others are talking about this movie again, quite an underrated gem. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Dale R Based on the 1831 novel by Victor Hugo, this movie stars Tom Hulce as Quasimodo, Demi Moore as Esmeralda, Tony Jay as Frollo and Kevin Kline as Phoebus. If you are a big fan of the novel, this movie may not interest you as many things are changed to make it part of the Disney brand. However, what they do change works and this ended up being one of my favorite Disney Renaissance movies. The animation is well done, the voice actors do a great job, and, in my humble opinion, this is by far the best soundtrack (songs and score) in Disney animated canon. The biggest problem with this film is its inconsistent tone. It goes from these mind blowingly epic scenes (i.e. the “Sanctuary” scene) to scenes that are slapstick comedy or fart jokes and that doesn’t work. I’m not the first to say this, but if they had made the gargoyle characters figments of Quasi’s imagination this would be a far better movie! As is, this movie is still really amazing and I highly recommend a watch! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Smaug Z I'm so amazed! This is like best disney movie of all time (yep, better than lion king). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Gabriel Emil C It may be dark, but it's part of its charm. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Ryland C The most darkest and mature Disney movie ever…. And I love it! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/27/24 Full Review Caleb K A beautiful film about religious hypocrisy that isn’t afraid to get dark and mature when needed.
