Critics Consensus

Joel Schumacher's tongue-in-cheek attitude hits an unbearable limit in Batman & Robin resulting in a frantic and mindless movie that's too jokey to care much for.

Peter Bradshaw Guardian An amiable, almost farcical Batman episode, with George in Nespresso mode. Rated: 3/5 May 17, 2019 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Schumacher is like a bad stepdad who thinks we'll love him if he just feeds us candy all day. (Yes, Burton is the daddy in this metaphor - the manic-depressive, annoyingly emo daddy.) Jun 18, 2017 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal Of all modern Batmans, George Clooney bears the closest physical resemblance to the comic-book hero, but there isn't much to say about his performance because there isn't much performance to discuss. Jun 18, 2014 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) It’s hard to hate a movie that’s so fun, even if it’s quite flawed. Feb 28, 2024 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast It's not good, but it's not the total disaster its legacy would suggest. As an ode to the Silver Age of the Caped Crusader, it gets a lot of things right, but the pacing grinds to a halt any time one of our heroes is on screen. Thank god for Uma Thurman. Rated: 2.5/5 Dec 12, 2022 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast There's pleasure to be found in how campy Joel Schumacher's second Batman outing is (puns!), but everyone except Thurman and Schwarzenegger are phoning their performances in. Too long and too focused on toy sales, this is excess, but not the good kind. Rated: 2/5 Dec 7, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Bakercakes It pains me to write this, as I’ve been a Batman fan since I could first remember, but this movie is borderline unwatchable. Everything from the script, to the way it’s shot/edited, leaves one wondering what the Hell everybody involved with it was thinking, as it was being made. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/26/23 Full Review j f Only four year away from 9/11…The freedom and innocence of those heady daze is on full display here. Highlighted by Mr Freezes roller-hockey goons and campy sound effects. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Toby D *Batman & Robin* (1997), directed by Joel Schumacher, is a notorious misfire, often labeled one of the worst films ever made, and it’s not hard to see why. George Clooney’s Batman, a role he’s publicly apologized for, feels like a parody, drowned in a neon-soaked, pun-riddled mess that amplifies the camp of the 1960s Adam West series to absurd levels. The film’s relentless barrage of cringe-worthy one-liners—like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze bellowing ice-related puns—makes it a painful endurance test, despite the actor’s clear enjoyment. The plot is a nonsensical blur, with Chris O’Donnell’s Robin shouting dated catchphrases like “Cowabunga!” and Uma Thurman’s Poison Ivy chewing scenery in a way that’s both campy and forgettable. Alicia Silverstone’s Batgirl adds little beyond a token presence, and the entire ensemble feels trapped in a garish cartoon that lacks the heart or depth of earlier entries. It’s less a movie and more a chaotic, toy-commercial fever dream. Yet, *Batman & Robin* isn’t entirely devoid of charm—its unapologetic excess can be perversely entertaining, like a trainwreck you can’t look away from. Schwarzenegger’s gleeful overacting and the sheer audacity of the production design have a certain nostalgic appeal for some. Still, it’s a spectacular failure that sank the franchise for years, proving that even Batman can’t survive an overdose of bad puns and poor execution. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review Chet M Unbearable. Not recommended! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Michael A This past summer, I finally found the courage to watch the film in its entirety. In 1997, I walked out of the theater. it's bloated, corny, devilishly loud, and inexplicably marred with so much nonsensical colored light and steam, I lost track of Batman. It's not so much that I can't see what the director was trying to do. It's more that the director goes through unnecessary steps to attain the goal, and it feels really messy. Maybe a page out of Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy is something he should have looked at. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
