bill k Rating this 3 stars is probably a little high.......2 1/2 might be more apropos. Poor old Peter O'Toole sort of walks through his part as do the rest. The "continuity" factor is lacking - the four hours is nothing more than a series of "soapy" vignettes. We thought it should be called "The Winds of War Meets Downton Abbey". Pretty weak, but entertaining. The cinematography is stunning and if you've ever been on the Cornish Coast you will recognize some sights. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/12 Full Review Audience Member This is a wonderful drama in the style of a classic English novel. The production is beautiful, recreating early twentieth century England in exquisite detail. The characters are memorable, and charming. The stellar cast features a very young Emily Mortimer, and an even younger Keira Knightly, both of whom are brilliant. A fine example of Masterpiece Theater creations. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member British to its backbone this mini is entertaining even if the goings on are a bit cliche. The settings are the beautiful especially the main house of Nancherrow. Chock full of extraordinary actors, Peter O'Toole, Joanna Lumley and Susan Hampshire just for starters, in support where this suffers is in the main roles. The actress playing Loveday is unmemorable but that can be ignored. The real problem is Emily Mortimer, it isn't even all her fault for she is a decent actress but having someone with as much charisma as Keira Knightley play the character as a young girl and than switching to someone who doesn't hold the screen in the same way for the bulk of the story is bound to cause a something of a letdown.
