When Argentinean theater director Mario Suarez's (Miguel Ángel Solá) wife leaves him, he concentrates on making a movie centered around the tango. It isn't long before complications arise, starting with his leading lady, a dancer named Elena (Mía Maestro) -- who happens to be the girlfriend of financier Angelo Larroca (Juan Luis Galiardo). As Mario and Elena enter into an affair, he also finds himself challenged by backers who disapprove of dance sequences reflecting the country's dark years.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Tango makes a few false moves, but this dance-driven fantasy steps just the right side of the line between stultifying and seductive.

Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review CSM Staff Christian Science Monitor The plot and dialogue are far less engaging than in [director Carlos] Saura's best work, but the dance sequences are exuberantly performed and radiantly filmed. Audience Member Worth watching for the music alone and the dancing is as fine as you will ever see. One has to train from childhood to be that good. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Una de las mejores películas argentinas que he visto... Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member A film which utterly blew me away the first time I saw it. And each time since then, it still manages to take me away. A visual masterpiece, its dance sequences are exquisite, its music is amazing, and its story a tribute to the ever-waging battle of the visionary versus the financier. A film that I consider to be one of the best that I've ever seen. Another great film by the master director Carlos Saura. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A rich and clever film. The dancing is wonderful, the music is rich and womderful, and the story -- ah, the story. It has all these delicious twists and turns. Until the last scene, you are no quite sure what is going on. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member so well made and amazing choreographs Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Jan 2011 (with Setareh) - This is a modern musical but it gets so deep into the musical aspects and tango that it nearly loses its quality as a movie. The dancing scenes become boring and the actings are exaggerated to a level that it makes it very hard to get involved with the story and characters. The ending is however nice and appropriate.
