Director Hans-Jurgen Syberberg presents an inventive take on Richard Wagner's final opera, as performed by the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra with Armin Jordan conducting. Rather than a conventional filmed opera performance, Syberberg represents Wagner's retelling of the myth of King Arthur and the Holy Grail through an allusive blend of mixed media that refers to the composer's political and psychosexual leanings, as well as the co-option of his work by the Nazis after his death.

Dave Kehr Chicago Reader Edith Clever, miming to the voice of Yvonne Minton as the witch Kundry, gives a performance of great passion and authority-a brilliantly effective revival of silent-film acting techniques. Aug 29, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member As much a film about 'Parsifal' as a film of 'Parsifal'. The source material, sublime, is respected even as it is fairly mercilessly taken apart. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member nearly 30 years on and this remains the best production of Parsifal I have seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Very 80s, yet timeless, because of the transfiguring music. Jordan- who appears as Amfortas - conducts a stolid account of the score, but this is a movie that will be studied as a document in 100 years time as a signature upon the legacy of ther Master, and also of filiming opera/ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member A weird and unique take. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member It's Wagner's score. But not what you would typically see at a performance. This is a film rich in symbolism of its own right.
