Ever wonder where the femme fatale came from? Good, dirty fun. And familial intrigue!

Compared to Napoleon, this film is a bit of a disappointment, with little to raise it above mediocre period drama standards. It is quite glamorous and beautiful in places, and Gance is able to be more open with some content than most American films of the time. I mostly watched this because it features one of the few (maybe only?) sound film performances by Antonin Artaud. He's only in two scenes, but one of these features the sort of fire & damnation speeches he was born to deliver.
As an additional note, the two experimental films featured on the dvd are worth checking out. Au Secours features one of the last performances by Max Linder, a popular silent comedian whose reputation has been overshadowed by folks like Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd.

I know not everyone cares for Cesare Borgia, but Gance makes him little more than a bear in tights. Not a helpful comment I know, but come on.

An amazing film, I found it to be all bewitching in its theme and style. A really great story, powerful use of the epic style to convry emotion.
