The whodunnit aspect of the mystery is clever with several misdirections and false leads, complemented by an urgent and unsettled narrative that maximizes every minute with chills, intrigue, and dread. Go to Full Review

Bornedal does well to save his funds for a final act that starts to piece together the truth (it's all pretty much in the open for you to guess) and pit heroes against villains for a showdown that risks a surprisingly heavy body count. Go to Full Review

Ola G @Ollie1972 4d Ole Bornedal´s somewhat haunting dark and "realistic" thriller "Nattevagten" (aka Nightwatch) from 1994 is seen as a classic Danish film. The underlying themes such as sex, death, unfaithfulness, love, necrophilia, self-destructive behaviour and the instinct for survival are clear, but when re-seeing "Nattevagten" the flaws in the film are quite obvious to me. The storyline suffers from several illogical actions from the main characters which hardly win you over to cheer for them as they are not of the smartest kind. Besides that, the acting form the main cast are not all that convincing and the direction leaves you a bit unsatisfied. It's a slightly disturbing film with an intriguing vibe, but it could've been much better from several levels. It feels like a true b-movie today when watching it. Then again Ole Bornedal has said himself that "Nattevagten" was not "a great work of art, but it did help legitimize the idea that even European film art can make good use of generic stories." The grounded performances ensure you're rooting for all the right people. See more Logan D 06/22/2024 The new night watchman (Coster-Waldau) at a morgue experiences visions while doing his rounds. When a serial killer begins to murder hookers, he becomes the prime suspect. That's what he gets for having sex where he did! An enjoyable mystery thriller excepting it may be too easy to decipher who the killer is. Some moments of dark humor as well. See more Lars N @movie_douche 12/20/2023 Besides from some iconic shots this did not age well. See more 02/05/2020 Classic Danish film with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in his debut and Kim Bodnia and his future wife Rikke Louise Andersson. Martin takes a job at Department of Forensic Medicine in Copenhagen. The place is super creepy with bodies in the basement and that lonely hospital look. Martin and his friend Jens are up to a game of dare and prostitutes, drinking and stupidity is a part of the lives for these two law students. A serial killer is on the loose and naturally Martin gets mixed up in it since he works were the bodies are stored. This is both witty, clever and creapy. It's all you can ask from a thiller and it's pace is lovely. Twists and constant development keeps you interested and the scary atmosphere is often right with you. Solid acting and overall good production. Few stupid turns and that appreciated touch that never makes you safe for what's coming next. I've read rumors about a late follow up as this film is 25 years of age now. It's remade before but I'm certain that a second film can top this one. Really enjoyable stuff! 8 out of 10 radios.
